By the time Laurent arrived at work early Thursday morning, his assistant informed him that the Chief wanted him to come to his office as soon as he got in. Laurent dropped off his things in his office and did what he was asked. He knocked on the Chief's open door. "Morning, Chief, you wanted to see me?"
"Yes, come in, Laurent. Close the door behind you. Have a seat."
Laurent noticed his Chief had a smile on his face and seemed to be bursting to tell him something. At least he wasn't in any trouble, Laurent surmised.
"So, have you heard the news?"
"News, what news?"
"They got the bastard!"
Laurent paused for a moment. "Wait. You mean...Sandoval?"
Chief chuckled. "Yep, one and the same. They finally caught him."
Laurent sat forward in his chair, staring at his Chief. "Are they sure?"
"Positive. Yeah, it's him. They finally caught him." The Chief chuckled. "I understand he was wearing a crude disguise when they captured him but it's definitely him."
"When? Where was he?"
"I didn't get the word until about 2 hours ago," Chief said. "So, I don't have all the facts yet, but I got a call from the FBI Chief just before I got in this morning. He was on his way to the Pentagon for meetings, but he said he wanted to be the one to tell me. From what I understand, as soon as they were able to track his laptop, they went into warp speed. A team of Agents flew out right after they tagged his location. He was picked up in a small town about an hour and a half outside of Santiago, Chile."
"Chile? Wow!" Laurent's thoughts instantly went to Larry. Finally, some good news he knew Larry would be anxious to hear. "How in the hell did he get that far without being captured sooner?"
Chief shrugged, shaking his head. "Good question. You did say the guy was resourceful. FBI will probably need to investigate where the failures were. Heads are probably going to roll for this one. But he probably had some cash with him, and money talks. According to the FBI Chief, Sandoval didn't use any credit cards, except on his initial transaction. I understand, while he was still in Nicaragua, hiding out, he made an online transaction for a reservation to a...hostel in Venezuela, using a fake identity with a credit card in that fake name. They were actually hoping he would use a credit card, in order to further track him, but he probably knew they would be tracked, which is why he used a fake identity. In some of the places he traveled to, I'm sure I don't have to tell you that money is like...a god. Maybe that was Sandoval's strategy."
"Yeah, but how did he get through customs?" Laurent asked. "I understand Sandoval was placed on an international watch list."
Chief shrugged and sighed. "Yeah, well, I understand he was picked up in a remote area. Again, maybe that was his plan, to travel to and lay low in remote areas where watch lists don't get much traction. In any regard, they finally got him. This is great news. I understand FBI had flown in before nightfall the night before. He was holed up in a rented cabin under the alias of Fernando Sanchez."
"Fernando Sanchez?" Laurent chuckled, shaking his head.
"Yeah. I was told FBI and local law enforcement ambushed him outside the cabin early the following morning."
"Well, however they caught him, it's about time," Laurent said. "The spouse and the housekeeper will be very happy to hear he's finally been captured."
"Yeah, I thought you'd be glad to get this news as well. The spouse and the housekeeper can finally start to put all this behind them."
"Yeah. So, do they know yet?"
