Spot snuck around the back on the Manhattan Lodging House.

Normally when he was visiting, which was a rare enough occasion, he would go through the front door like any normal person.

But him being in Manhattan was not for business or for giving Jack threats if his Newsies were on Brooklyn turf.

The one exception of this of course was one Racetrack Higgins.

He tried multiple times to get rid of him when he first started selling there.

But upon being insulted by the blonde boy.

Multiple times.

Spot decided it was high time he left the boy be and went on about his days as though he wasn't even there.

He still made sure to check up on him at least once a week.

Solely for the purpose of preventing any fights between Brooklyn and Manhattan, of course.

This went on like clockwork, until Spot realised that something else was making him so desperate to see Race.

And that something was a big crush.

And that crush only grew and grew and that is why Spot spent his Wednesday evenings sneaking around the back of the Manhattan Lodging House.

"Race," he hissed through the window at his secret boyfriend. "Racer, it's me."

Some movement was heard from inside and footsteps with great resemblance to those of a elephant.

Spot sometimes wondered how he could walk so quietly but still be so clumsy at the same time.

(Fun fact: Contrary to popular belief, elephants actually walk very quietly because their feet have a large padding which softens the impact. They also have very straight legs which help evenly distribute their weight and can pick up bodies through their feet.)

He didn't care though, Race didn't wake any of the other Newsies up and no one found out about their relationship.

They weren't exactly sure why they wouldn't tell anybody.

Race swore on his life that all of the Manhattan Newsies were interested in other boys and Spot suspected that some of his boys were together.

They supposed it was the thrill of the mystery that they enjoyed so much.

The window was thrown open as slowly as possible to prevent any of the Newsies hearing it.

The windows did have a reputation for being exceptionally creaky.

"Spottie," Race exclaimed. "I've missed you so much."

"We saw each other three hours ago," he deadpanned.

"That was too long," Race whined.

"Okay, lover boy. Get a move on though, I don't want to be late for our date."

Race practically screamed in excitement there and then.

He did in fact scream but Spot putting his hand over Race's mouth muffled it some amount.

The boys linked hands and Spot led them to the location of their mystery date.

Their favourite thing about having dates that late at night was that there was barely anyone around.

And those who were weren't exactly in the position to get the couple into trouble.

"Where are we going?" Race asked the older but much shorter boy.

Spot sighed. "It's a surprise, love. And if you ask again I will turn around and bring you back to Manhattan."

Race nodded and kissed Spot on the cheek. "Thank you for doing this," he said quietly.

Spot smiled, a genuine smile that few people saw. Race, naturally, saw it the most.

They walked in silence before Race almost broke it.

"If you ask where we are going I will not hesitate to turn around," he threatened.

"I was going to ask about selling," he lied.

Spot shot him a look, clearly seeing through the lie but not bothering to comment on it.

"We're almost there," Spot told him as they neared the Brooklyn Bridge.

Spot led him down underneath the bridge to a small beach beside the river.

"This is nice," Race commented.

Spot smiled lightly. "I like to come here to get away from life. I've never told anyone about it before but I want you to know."

Race looked at him and held his hand.

"It's like I used to use this to pretend I was someone else but now you make me the person I kept imagining I was."

Race looked out across the water.

"I love you Spottie," he said below his breath.

"Love you too Racer."

Race turned a bright red and dropped his head into Spot's chest.

"What's wrong?" Spot asked him.

"You weren't meant to hear that," he mumbled.

Spot chuckled and kissed him lightly on the forehead.

"Well, I did and I love you too so you'll have to deal with it."

Race looked into Spot's eyes and felt himself get carried away.

Despite what Spot says, his eyes are the most beautiful Race had ever seen, and he gets to look at them all the time.

Subconsciously, the boys leaned in nearer each other.

Upon realising this Race lifted his hand up to Spot's cheek and rubbed his thumb below Spot's eye.

"Can I?" he asked quietly, not daring to break the comfortable silence that had fallen over them.

Spot nodded ever so slightly and leaned in towards Race.

Their lips connected and sparks flew.

The same way they did when they kissed for the first time and the way they most likely will when they kiss for the last time.
