Jack left for work before Davey did almost everyday so Davey was the one to lock up the apartment when he left for work.

The system worked perfectly for both of them, Jack needed longer to get to his office while Davey's law firm was only a ten minute walk away from the apartment.

Most days, Jack got back before Davey so he'd start to cook dinner or do a chore to make Davey's life easier. He was particularly surprised to come back one day to find the apartment unlocked.

"Davey," Jack called out. "Are you back already?"

It wasn't common for Davey to be back earlier but it happened every now and again.

When he didn't get a reply, Jack looked into their bedroom, surprised to find Davey under the covers. "What are you doing back already, love?" he asked.

Jack walked over to the bed and sat down beside Davey. He frowned when he felt how warm Davey was when he brushed hair from his husband's face and how little he was breathing.

"Davey, wake up." Jack shook Davey's shoulder gently. "Come on, love, let me see those beautiful eyes."

"If you don't wake up I'm gonna- I'll call an ambulance. You're worrying me."

Davey didn't respond and after five more minutes of trying to wake him up, Jack finally gave up and called an ambulance.

Soon, Davey was being wheeled into an ambulance and Jack was left in the apartment, his mind wandering away to him wondering what he would do if he lost Davey.

After a few minutes of standing, almost frozen, he realised that he needed to call Davey's parents.

Pulling out his phone, he quickly called Esther and rocked back and forth on his heels as it rang.

"Jack." Esther's voice was chipper as it came through the phone. "How are you?"

"I'm okay, Mrs. Jacobs but, um, Davey's in hospital."

"What? Why? Is he okay?"

"I dunno. I came home from work and he was real pale and he was barely breathing and he was so hot and I panicked and called an ambulance," Jack explained in a rush. "I was so scared."

"Do you know which hospital he's in?" Jack relayed the information of Davey's hospital on to them. "Okay, are you there?"

"No. I'm still at the apartment. I'm a terrible husband, I should be there with him."

"You're not a terrible husband. Mayer and I are leaving now and we'll come get you on our way. Can you wait for us?"

"Okay. Please get here soon," Jack practically begged.

"I promise we will. Just hang tight."

Esther hung up the phone after that and within the next twenty minutes, though for Jack it was an eternity, they were all on their way to the hospital together.
