Racetrack Higgins and Spot Conlon were considered to be the 'it' couple in the World High School.

Spot was the quarterback of the school's football team and had girls practically tripping over to try and date him.

Race was not quite as popular, he did have a large group of friends which in his opinion was better than popularity.

Both boys had barely spoken two words to each other before they met and sparks started flying.

They were in their shared English class where they had been studying Hamlet and were assigned to be partners on a project.

At first Race found Spot to be too cocky for his liking and sometimes all Race wanted was to punch him right between his eyes.

Spot had a similar reaction to Race at first too.

He found it insufferable how Race seemed to be his be step ahead of him on the project, it made him feel like he did nothing useful.

Eventually though, they fell into a system that worked for the both of them.

Race would write what they had to say and Spot would provide the visual aid.

Race hated art since it was the one thing he could never pick up and Spot hated writing but enjoyed art.

Was he any good at art?

No, anything but.

But he did enjoy it so that was something.

Once they completed the project and got an A on it, they couldn't help but feel a pull towards each other.

They started hanging out after school and on weekends.

Spot worried about hanging out with him in school though.

Race was one of the few openly out kids in his school, the rest being largely in his friend group too.

He didn't have anything against Race for being gay but he had heard some of the other boys on the football team making fun of Race's friend group, the Newsies as they called themselves.

He had wanted to soak them all into oblivion, he didn't even know Race at that point, but refrained due to a minor thing called school rules.

One day though, he finally had enough of them and snapped.

They were changing out of their gear after training when the three main perpetrators, Chad, Nathan and Jackson started talking.

"Did you see Kelly and Jacobs started dating?" Nathan asked them with a clear distaste obvious in his voice.

"Ew, how pathetic can they be?" Jackson sneered.

The other two boys nodded and voiced words of agreement.

"It's like that friend of theirs, Race? Is that his name?" the mention of Race's name brought Spot's attention to their conversation.
