Spot rubbed his hands against his sides in an attempt to make them less sweaty.

He didn't know why he was so nervous.

He was never nervous.

But standing in front of Medda Larkin's door before asking for her permission to propose to her son certainly made him nervous.

He had tried to dress nicely too, it wasn't his first time meeting her but he still wanted to give a good impression.

He was waiting outside for what felt like an eternity when Medda finally opened the door.

"Spot, what a surprise to see you," she exclaimed when she saw him. "What can I do for you?"

"I was wondering if I could ask you something," he started. "It's about Race."

"Of course. Why don't you come in?" she suggested.

Spot nodded and stepped inside the door.

He played with his fingers nervously as Medda walked behind the counter dividing the kitchen and living.

She returned a moment later carrying two cups of tea.

She handed one over to Spot and sat down on one of the armchairs.

Spot sat at the end of the couch nearest her.

"Is everything alright?" Medda asked.

"You know how Race and I have been dating for a while," he started. Medda nodded, suspecting where the conversation was going. "I love him so much and I know how much your opinion matters to him."

"I know you love him, the way your eyes light up when you talk about him gives it away."

"Well, I was wondering if I could get your permission to ask Race to marry me," he explained.

"Spot you're twenty-five and Race is twenty-three, you don't have to have my permission to propose to him."

"I know but Race doesn't want to disappoint you and it'd make him so much more happy if you were okay with it so I just wanted to ask," he rambled.

Medda reached out and put her hand over Spot's.

"I'm more than happy for you to ask Race to marry you. I know he loves you and you love him. You've been dating for almost eight years too, it's about time you two tied the knot," she joked.

Spot smiled and breathed in relief, he didn't know what he'd do if he she'd said no.

He'd probably propose anyway.

"Thank you so much Miss Medda," he said.

"Any time sweetie, and just call me Medda," she said. "Do you need my help with anything?"

"No, I've only told Jack and Crutchie for obvious reasons and Elmer and Buttons know since I ordered flowers from them."

"That's lovely. When are you going to do it?" she asked.
