A Secret Wedding

It had been a month since Race and Albert had married and they had told nobody. Not even their friends.

Race hadn't even told his mother, something he knew he'd regret but with the rush of it all happening, he just simply forgot.

"Race." Jack poked Race in the side playfully as they sat on the couch at their mother's house.

Race looked up from his phone, where he had been texting Albert to see if Race needed to pick anything up from the shops on his way home. "Yeah?"

"What's that?" Jack asked, pointing at Race's wedding ring.

"What's what?" Race asked, playing dumb.

"What's on your finger?"

Race looked at Jack like he had three heads. "My wedding ring," he stated as though it was common knowledge.

"Since when are you married?"

"Last month. Al and me got married," he explained.

Jack blinked, genuinely unable to believe that his baby brother was married.

"Racer, you're both twenty."

"Albert's twenty-one."

Jack sighed. "Have you told Mama?"

Race shook his head and looked down at his lap.

"You should," Jack advised. "She'd want to know and it's better to tell her sooner rather than later."

"I suppose." Race shrugged.

"Go tell her. I'll go with you if you want."

"Please."

Jack hugged Race when they stood up. "I'm so happy for you," he whispered. "You deserve all the happiness Albert gives you."

Race smiled into Jack's shoulder. "Thank you."

The brothers walked to the kitchen together where Medda was cooking their dinner.

"Mama," Jack said, announcing their presence. "Race has some big news."

Medda turned around and looked at her youngest son expectantly.

"Albert and I got married," Race blurted out, avoiding his mother's eyes.

"Baby, can you say that again but slower?"

Race told her again. "I know you're mad I didn't tell you but-"

Race was cut off with a hug. "I'm not mad at you but it would have been nice to have been told."

"I'm sorry but it was a spur of the moment thing."

"Congratulations, honey. I'm proud of you."

"Thank you Momma," Race whispered.

"But Albert is coming over for dinner," Medda instructed.

Race laughed and nodded. "I'll call him now to see if he's able to come."

"Good. I'll add some more pasta for him."

Race went to his old bedroom and sat down on the bed before opening up his phone and calling Albert.

When Albert arrived, Race didn't even notice. He'd been so caught up in his own thoughts that he failed to notice all the talking at the door of the apartment.

"Hey darling," Albert said, standing in the doorway. "You alright?"

Race looked up and Albert and nodded. "Yeah. Just got caught up in memories," he admitted.

"Remember when we first became friends after I moved here you brought me through your window so we could play video games when we both couldn't sleep."

"Your accent was so adorable back then." Albert rolled his eyes. Race was always saying that his southern accent was cute. "It still is but it was so strong back then. I could have listened to it for hours."

"I could still listen to you speaking Italian for days."

"I'll just have to start speaking Italian all the time them," Race threatened, a grin pulling at his lips.

"I'd learn it if you did." Albert placed his hands on Race's waist. "I'd learn more than the few words I already know."

"Boys," Medda called, getting the attention of everyone in the apartment. "Dinner's ready."

Albert removed his hands from Race's waist and instead moved one of them to his hand.

"We better go before dinner goes cold."

By some great feat, dinner went surprisingly well. Crutchie arrived while Race and Albert were in the bedroom.

Race was thankful for him being there because he kept Jack reigned in, always changing the subject whenever Jack tried to give the big brother talk.

Crutchie had reacted well to the news of their marriage also. As soon as he found out he'd hugged the newly weds and demanded that he got to see the ring.

Race had gladly shown it.

Not long after, they told the rest of the Newsies after Jack let slip so they had no choice other than to explain the full story.

For their tenth anniversary, they held a small ceremony in Medda's summer house on Long Island.

As much as they grumbled about it at first they loved it. It was nice to have a ceremony that they could share with the rest of their friends and family.

Even though their marriage was a spur of the moment decision at midnight, they couldn't have been happier with that decision.
