Antonio winced at the constant pain flowing through him as he tried to fall asleep.

Why did his father insist on making his life hell?

He could maybe even tolerate if it was verbal and his thoughts kept him up, but he didn't even have any thoughts to accompany him in his sleeplessness.

Just constant pain reminding him of everything he wasn't.

He didn't understand what he did, or didn't do.

He really didn't get it.

He tried to be the perfect son, he honestly did try.

Good good grades, never went to parties or drank or did drugs (and that was already more than his father did), he never even met up with people outside of school just to make his father happy.

Not like he had any friends to meet up with anyway.

Yet everything he did was never enough.

He had to do everything on top of that, cook, clean, support him and his father and get perfect grades.

It was tough.

Too tough most of the time.

He didn't have any friends to talk to.

He wished he did, just so he could get stuff off of his chest.

Just so he could be a teenager for once in his life.

He wouldn't want to burden any of his friends with his troubles, even if he had them.

He didn't know who to talk to about it, he went to the school counsellor once, just to talk about being stressed but when the school brought it up to his father he got a beating.

Antonio didn't understand why they even told him, but they did and he learnt his lesson.

His feelings should just not be shared, he honestly liked keeping things to himself, it was like having someone to share a secret with, just that person was himself.

The main problem was that while in his head he blew the whole situation out of proportion, it wasn't as bad as his head made it out to be.

His father wanted what was best for him, that's why he could be physical with Antonio. He just wanted to toughen him up. Get him ready for the real world.

And not everyone knew how to say Antonio, so really by calling him Anthony he was helping him prepare for that too.

All he was doing was making Antonio a real man and he should be more thankful for all the effort his father put in.

But still, a part of Antonio deep down just wanted his father to be proud of him. It didn't seem like too much to ask for.

All he really wanted was his father's love, the way it had been before his mother died.
