An Long-Time Overdue Question
Ship - Javid/Javey
Era - Modern
Triggers - None. It's fluff and nothing but fluff.

Davey held the velvet box that had been hiding in his sock drawer for months in his hand. He'd meant to ask the big question months ago but every time he tried to plan an evening, something, or someone, always came up.

Selfishly, he was fed up with it and just wanted to see the ring upon Jack's finger.

"Aba, what's that?"

Davey could have died from shock, if one of his children sneaking up on him or Jack - or sometimes him and Jack at moments that really don't want to be snook up on - wasn't such a common occurrence.

"It's a surprise."

"For who?"

Davey sighed and sat down on the bed. "Come here, Eli," he said.

Elijah clambered on to the bed and tucked himself into Davey's side. "Who's it for?"

"It's for Dad."

"Really? Is it Dad's birthday soon?"

Davey laughed at the amazement that was so typical with five-year-olds.

"No. You know how Dad and I aren't married?" Elijah nodded, hanging onto Davey's every word. "I want to ask him to marry me."

Elijah didn't answer, instead screaming for joy. Davey was quick to quieten him.

"Can I tell anyone?"

Davey sighed and considered the options for a moment. Of all his children, Elijah was most likely to, although accidentally, let slip about the secret.

"You can tell Olivia and Caleb. Don't tell anyone else."

"What if I tell someone on accident? Will you hate me?"

"Elijah Francis Jacobs-Kelly," Davey started. "I will never hate you. Even if you don't do your chores or even if you murder someone. I will always love you."

"Okay. I'm going to go tell them now."

Davey smiled and Elijah climbed off his lap and ran into the room he shared with Caleb. He didn't need to try to listen if he had relayed the news on as Elijah lacked the ability to talk at a normal level.

It was a good thing that Jack hadn't arrived home from work just yet. The entire plan would have been ruined if he was.

A little while later, Olivia knocked lightly on the bedroom door. "Can I ask you something, Aba?"

"Of course."

"Are you really going to ask Dad to marry you?"

"I was hoping to. Why?"

Olivia shrugged. "You said that you and Dad don't have to be married for us to be a family. Does that mean we aren't a real family yet?"

"No. We are a real family. This is- it's something I've wanted to ask your dad for a long time and I feel like now is the right time."
