Race ran up to Jack as soon as he saw him in the cafeteria.

"I found him Jack," he told his older brother.

Jack looked at him in confusion. "Found who?"

"My soulmate. He's really short but so good looking and his eyes are gorgeous but he doesn't like talking much and I asked him to have lunch with us and you better like him 'cause he's my soulmate and you're my brother and please don't hate him," Race explained in one breath.

Jack blinked at the younger boy. "Wait, your found your soulmate?" Race nodded. "And you invited him to eat with us despite him being antisocial and us not being able to stop talking for two second."

Race nodded again.

"Okay," Jack said slowly. "Well, I'm happy for you."

"Thanks. Medda gave me a cookie too since I wasn't feeling great. One of the big ones and all," he bragged while waving his hands around in the air.

"I'm not too hungry though so I might split it with someone." He pulled his lunch out of his bag as they arrived to the table with the rest of the Newsies.

"I'm sure your favourite brother would happily share it with you," he said suggestively.

"Yeah I'm sure," he agreed. A mischievous grin grew on his face. "Hey Crutchie, would you like half of my cookie."

Crutchie looked up from his conversation with Elmer to Race.

"No thanks you can have it all. Thanks for offering though," he said with a smile.

Race turned back to Crutchie to see Jack with a look of betrayal on his face. "And here I was thinking you loved me."

"I do. But I love Crutchie more," he reassured his older brother. "I'm only joking. I love you Jackie."

"I love you too Racer but you should go look for your soulmate, he might be lost," Jack suggested.

Race nodded and stood up from the table to go and find Spot.

"Hey Spot," he called out to the boy who looked incredibly lost.

Spot turned around and a look of what Race could have sworn was relief on his face. "Hey."

"Do you still wanna eat lunch with us?" he asked.

"Sure- wait, us?" Spot honestly had been hoping that it was only Race he'd be eating with.

"Yeah, me and my friends. They're alright, just as long as you aren't homophobic or anything, then they'll probably like you," he told Spot.

Spot nodded and followed Race over to the table that all the Newsies were sat around.

"Spot, this is everyone. Everyone, this is Spot," he announced to the Newsies.

Race sat down beside Jack and motioned for Spot to sit on the other side of him.

Jack leaned over to Race and poked him on the shoulder. "That's you soulmate? He looks kind of scary."

If Jack wanted to add on to his comment he couldn't due to the glare he was given from Race.

The rest of lunch went by with Spot talking almost solely to Race and Jack trying to interrogate him to see if he was a good enough soulmate for Race.

The end of the day rolled around slowly for some and quickly for others but it rolled around nonetheless.

Race was getting his books for homework out of his locker when he heard someone stomping up to a locker a couple rows down.

He peered around the door of his to see Spot angrily trying to unlock his locker.

"Do you need help?" he asked after a good thirty seconds of Spot almost punching the locker.

"No, I don't need help," he replied.

Race nodded and turned back to his own locker. "Well, if you do, you know where to find me."

Race pulled the last few books from his locker, occasionally sneaking a look at Spot.

He couldn't help it if his soulmate happened to be incredibly attractive and he liked to look at him.

He also couldn't help it if he zoned out while thinking about said boy's good looks.

A tap on his shoulder brought him back to reality.

"I need help with the stupid locker," Spot admitted.

Race smiled at him. "Okay, I'll help you."

Spot smiled gratefully and told Race the combination for his locker.

Race reached up and started to put in the combination when Spot stopped him.

"What's that on your hand?" he asked suspiciously.

Race pulled his sleeve down over his hand. "It's just the soulmate thing. Nothing important."

"Can I see it?" he asked the blonde boy in a gentle voice.

Race nodded and held his hand out for Spot to see.

"That's- that's my handwriting," Spot said in amazement. "Race, why is my handwriting on your hand?"

Race looked like a deer in headlights, not knowing what to say or the right way to say it.

"Um, it's- I don't know, must just be a coincidence," he lied. "Similar handwriting or something."

"Okay. I know you're lying but I won't push you," he told the younger boy.

Race looked down at his shoes while he had an internal debate.

On one hand he wanted to tell Spot because he reckoned he wouldn't be able to keep the secret much longer.

But on the other hand he didn't want to scare away Spot, they had only known each other for one day after all.

"We're soulmates," he explained. "That's why it's on my hand."

Spot nodded slowly. "I've been pretty crappy as a soulmate haven't I? I haven't been the most pleasant person ever."

"We've only known each other for a few hours," Race pointed out.

"Still. You know what? Let's try this again," he decided. "Hi, I'm Spot. I just moved here from Brooklyn."

"I'm Race, I have two older brothers so be warned."

Spot chuckled lightly and smiled at Race.

"Now that we're properly introduced. May I interest you in a date with me?"
