Chapter 9:

Levy pulled at the end of her purple top, waiting patiently for Lucy. She leaned back against the locker as she waited.

Kids shuffled along the corridor making their way to various classes. Mira and Erza had just left to their own class. Juvia had swimming practice now and Kinana had volunteered to help at the library.

"Hey!"

Levy looked up to see a grinning pink head. Wasn't this Natsu?

"Hi!" Levy smiled back and then noticed a towering figure behind him.

"G-Gajeel..."

"Do you know where Lucy is?" Natsu asked.

"Um, Uh, no. I'm waiting for h-her." Levy stuttered, eyes on Gajeel's metal pierced face.

Gajeel didn't look at her. He was scanning the crowd with his red-slit eyes narrowed.

"Oh," Natsu sounded disappointed, "Well, I thought we could be friends 'coz we agreed to meet at school."

Levy forced her attention back to Natsu.

"She'll be here. Maybe she's just late."

"She ain't coming. It's ten minutes since school started," Gajeel's gruff voice sounded as he looked straight into her eyes.

Levy shrunk back.

Gajeel seemed to notice that as he frowned.

Pushing a humming Natsu aside, he stooped down till he was on eye-level with Levy. "You afraid of me, Shory?"

"N-N-No."

He narrowed his eyes at her.

"Y-Yes?" She swallowed.

He grunted, his face a look of displeasure.

"Levy!"

Levy looked away, seemingly thankful, to see a flustered Lucy push through the crowd of students.

"Lu!'

She stopped in front of the lockers gasping and out of breath, "Sorry, I'm late. I... Natsu?"

"Hey, Luce!" He grinned, "I thought I'd come see ya."

Lucy's face morphed into a warm smile, "That's so sweet, Natsu!"

Levy watched Natsu grin.

"Oh!" Lucy fumbled with her bag and brought out a thick envelope.

"Here it is, Levy!" She said, "I sat up all night and drew up the posters for the defense class."

Gajeel and Natsu looked over Lucy's shoulder as she pulled out a stack of colorful sheets.

Levy's eyes twinkled with delight, "That's wonderful, Lu! Oh My Gosh, did you sit up all night? Is that the reason you're late?"

"Not all night," Lucy tried to amend.

Levy's heart melted a the sweet gesture, "You're the sweetest. The others have classes right now. We could put up the posters together."

Lucy smiled, "Great!"

The hallway had cleared up now leaving only Lucy, Levy, Natsu and Gajeel at their lockers.
