"I'll leave you guys alone." The doctor smiled before shutting the door after leaving.

"Hey baby." I whispered as I walked over.

She was still unconscious, but they had her hooked up to a monitor. I could see her heart was beating steadily, and she still had an oxygen mask on. I couldn't help the tears that came to my eyes as I saw bruising already forming up the side of her arms and on her face. This would have been avoided if you had just listened to what she had to say.

I decided to shrug it off, knowing that I could ask her about it when she woke up. A part of me still thinks that she did cheat, but the other part of me loves her too much to believe she would ever do something like this. Only she knows.

"I'm sorry Lizzie." I sobbed as I bled her hand, running my fingers over her knuckles, that felt like ice. She's so cold.

I was sat there for about twenty minutes just holding her hand and listening to her steady heartbeat. Every now and then, my mind would trick me into thinking her finger twitched and that she was waking up, but every time I looked over, she was still sleeping peacefully. Come on baby, just wake up.

"Hey man." Landon said as he walked in the room.

"Oh uh, hey." I cleared my throat as I wiped my eyes and sat up in the chair.

"Don't do that." He shook his head at me, closing the door behind him.

"Do what?"

"Pretend like you're not scared for what that doctor has to say."

"I'm fucking terrified for what the doctor has to say Lando. She fell down forty fucking stairs and still hasn't woken up. I mean, I thought she had broken her neck, and she probably has. You know how fucking life threatening that could be? She might never be able to walk again. If she ever wakes up, I mean, it's still not guaranteed that she will and-"

"Let's not get ahead of ourselves here. She will wake up, she just needs time. Liza's a strong girl but you need to give her time to work back to us. And if she does wake up, and she can't walk, I just know she's going to have so many people supporting her and helping her through it. She'll have you, me, dad, Colson, Finn, and everyone else. She'll be okay." He tried to assure.

"You don't fucking know that. And I really don't need you filling my head with false hope." It's still a possibility.

She's in that bed because of me.

I caused all of this.

"How is she?" Colson voice rang through as he opened the door.

"Stable. She's asleep, but she's stable." Landon answered, swallowing hard.

"What happened?" Travis asked as he shut the door.

"She was walking after me." I answered dryly, gaining their attention. "We had gotten into a little argument and I didn't want it to escalate and have us say things we didn't mean out of anger so I walked away. I went down the stairs because I didn't want to get caught waiting for the elevator, or worse, be stuck inside it with her when we're both about to blow up. I think she tried following me but tripped. I was almost all the way down the stairs when she took me out. I dislocated my knee, but she had landed on her neck funny. I called the ambulance and now we're here. This is my fault." I answered, seemingly talking to myself at the end as I let the tears freely fall down my face.

"Whatever happens is not your fault Jaden. Arguments happen in couples, and you did the right thing by walking away. Coming after you was her decision. What happened to Liza was an accident. An unfortunate event that no one could have foreseen or prevented. You need to remember that." Travis tried to assure to me. You could have prevented it if you stayed where you were.

"Thanks T." I offered a half smile, still feeling incredibly guilty for what happened.

"Can I ask all of you but the husband to leave please. We have her MRI results." The doctor stated, holding the door open for everyone who needed to leave.

"See you in a bit buddy." Landon sympathised, tapping my shoulder before leaving after Colson and Travis.

"Sir-"

"Is she gonna be okay? When's she gonna wake up?" I started bombarding him with questions.

"Sir, all will be explained momentarily." He answered, placing her MRI scans on the table for me to see. I don't know what any of this means.

"Please just tell me if my wife is going to wake up."

My heart started hammering against my chest as I saw the solemn look on his face. I couldn't help the sob that escaped my lips as his expression didn't change. I didn't want to jump to conclusions, but I had a feeling I knew where this was going.

"Sir, your wife had a nasty fall. You were right in saying to the operator that she had landed on her neck. As you can see from the MRI scans and these x-rays here, she had broken it.

Now usually, in most cases, the patient will wake up, but will suffer life changing consequences. None of this was your fault or hers. Unfortunately, your wife is not one of those patients. She won't be waking up."

"But she's alive. This doesn't make sense. Why isn't she going to wake up?" I cried, looking over to see her sleeping and almost screaming at her inside my head for her to wake up and come back to me.

"Your wife is what we call brain dead. During the fall, or as she hit the ground, her spinal cord suffered many severs. The bones split going up and as a result, they disconnected from the mid part of the brain known as the medulla oblongata. There is no surgery we can do to fix this.

While you wife is still alive, her heart is beating, she cannot do basic tasks such as breathing, on her own because her brain isn't able to communicate to the rest of her body. The machine is breathing for her, and once she's taken off that machine, she will die. Your wife, and the foetus inside of her will not make it." He explained. Wait what?

"F-foetus? As in a baby? That can't be right, she can't get pregnant. She's got her tubes tied." I cried, needing him to say it wasn't true to save me from even more heartbreak.

"Even so, miracles happen in the strangest of ways. Your wife is almost three months pregnant. I'm sorry for your loss."
