I Want To Become A Runner

Rachel's POV
Me and Newt walk outside and look at the boys who are holding some sticks with something on the edge. Other boys holding some shields and Ben who is unarmed and walking to the maze doors. Actually not walking. The boys are pushing him toward there.

Ben:Guys you don't have to do this. Please.

Alby:I'm sorry Ben but rules are rules.

Ben:Wait, can I say one last thing?

Alby:Just make it quick.

Me and Newt who are standing closer to the boys listen closely what Ben is saying.

Ben:You're making a huge mistake. It's not me that should be exciled. It should be her. She's working for them! She's a liar! A liar!

He tried to run and attack me again but the boys with the shields stop him.

Alby:It's time.

With the sticks they hit the shields and slowly push Ben into the maze.

Ben :Please don't!

The maze doors start closing slowly and Ben has no other choice than to get in. He passes the walls and they close behind him.

The boys split up and return to their jobs. I keep staring at the closed doors.

Rachel:What is going to happen to him?

Newt:He's gonna be killed by the grievers.

Rachel:What are the grieves?

Newt:I don't know. No one does. We only know that they are some monsters that have a tail like the scorpion and if they sting you you get crazy.

Rachel:If you haven't seen them how do you know that they have a tail that looks like a tail of a scorpion.

Newt:We assume.

Rachel:And there is no cure?

Newt:No as far as we know.. We only know that if you get stung, we excile you. So don't get in the maze. Never.

He turns around to walk away

Rachel:Have you went on the maze?

Newt:No. I'm not a runner.

He keeps walking and I follow him

Rachel:I want to become a runner.

I say that and I stop a few steps behind him and then he stops.

Newt:You can't become a runner

Rachel:Why not? You already lost one runner so there is an open spot.

Newt:We've told you before the rules. You can't become a runner like that. It's not that easy. You have to wait months, years.

Rachel: How did Thomas became a runner in a month?

Newt:He's got skills. Do you have skills?

Rachel:I run fast and I'm strong. That's a skill for a runner.

Newt :Not enough.

Rachel:Hey, I beated up Gally and you say I have no skills?

Newt:It downs count. Gally is Gally

Rachel:He's 5 inches taller than me!

Newt:Doesnt count.

I roll my eyes.

Rachel:Ok, then tell me. What skill does Thomas and Minho have?

Newt:Ok, I'll tell you, but you won't interrupt me and after that we'll get back to work.

I nod

Newt:Minho is smart. He's got self control and he's the first runner.

Rachel:I'm sorry, what changes if he's the first runner?

Newt:I said you won't interrupt.

I let out an annoyed sigh.

Newt:Thomas is very fast, he's flexible and comes up with great ideas. I've been here for 5 years and Thomas is here one month. And in one month he changed the glade.

I look at him. My jaw is tightened. I want so much to become a runner. In the maze is the whole adventure.

Rachel:Fine. But I'll do my best to prove you and the others that I can become a runner.

Newt:You can try, but you won't succeed.

He smiles and I notice that our faces are a few inches away.

Rachel:We'll see about that.

Newt:Okay but we'll see about that tomorrow. It's late.

He walks away and I grimace mimicking him. "It's late". I get in the room with the hammocks and lie down.
