A.N: For those who suffer from the last longer story. Here, finally, a one shot.
And it's pure crack.
Have fun :D
-------------------------------------------------------
There are quite a few things that Arthur found incredibly boring.
He meant it. If it wasn't for Merlin – his adorably clumsy manservant – he probably wouldn't survive the council meetings his father forced him to attend. Okay, perhaps he was overreacting.
Arthur wouldn't die. But he'd fall asleep for sure.
And then Arthur would have to listen to yet ANOTHER boring lecture from king Uther in the flesh. Lectures were the second most boring thing Arthur could imagine. Only less boring than council meetings, because Uther's voice was at least loud enough that Arthur could focus.... for a while. Let's just say that was a circle that Arthur found impossible to escape.
It didn't matter. Arthur wouldn't fall asleep, while Merlin muttered stupid comments in Arthur's ear. All about the topics at hand, obviously.
Taxes, grain income, the latest gossip about the women of the lower town, because some of those council members tended to get distracted in their own speeches – stuff like that.
Instead, Arthur had to fight himself from breaking character by toppling over with laughter.
It was quite funny, actually. Uther always reminded Arthur that he needed to steel his nerves. That he needed to look strong and confident in front of the council. That he was never allowed to show how he felt.
Arthur was pretty sure Uther meant delicate things, like the count of dead soldiers after a battle. Or facing a sorcerer without showing fear.
Arthur was supposed to be strong and brave.
But Arthur was ALSO pretty sure that Uther had never been told a joke before.
It is one thing to keep your face straight in front of the cruelties of the world. It was a complete other thing, to listen to Merlin make subtle poetry about Sir Bredeviere's fated baldness.
So Arthur sat there, right next to his father and tried to keep his face from twitching each time Merlin fake coughed at him.
Especially, when eventually Uther asked, if perhaps the servant should be removed from the session. Such a cough should be treated by the court physician and not entertained during an important meeting.
At that moment, Arthur had almost sputtered out his wine and it took all his strength to explain to Uther that Merlin merely needed to drink some water and wasn't sick.
That was better than even thinking of explaining to Uther what a 'himbo' was and what that had to do with Sir Galahad and the never ending rain in the Valley of the fallen kings.
After that, Merlin was given some water and their excuses were cut in half. Merlin would have to keep quiet now. Which forced Arthur to finally listen to Sir Galahad again. Who had shifted his story into something more serious.
If also just as boring. Okay, maybe not boring. But Arthur was at his wits' end with this one.
Someone had sighted a sorcerer in the forest around Camelot.
No one knew who it was. Or where exactly. No one even knew what the sorcerer had done or what he looked like. It was just a rumor, with no culprit, no crime and no consequences. And the witnesses seemed to forget what they had witnessed about a day after they came to Camelot.
It was mysterious. They all just remembered some strange light, a guy who made strange curses and then he apparently disappeared.
But after half a year of the very same claims made again and again, Arthur really didn't know what to do about this anymore.
He already knew what would happen. His father would send him to find clues. Arthur would ride out with Merlin and a few knights and come back bare handed.
Lately, Arthur had decided to at least hunt some boars or deers on the way, so his actual hunt for nothing turned into something useful at least.
Quite frankly, Arthur was tired of his father's constant disappointment.
