For Antoine Dumont, things were always easy. Being one of the smartest and richest men in the world, he got things easily, without much trouble. But that didn't mean he didn't work hard to get them. He was a very, very hard working man.Best friend to Howard Stark (also one of the smartest and richest men in the world) after he arrived to America from Paris, they made up the perfect duo. An American genius and a French one were the perfect combination to give the world a new era of technology and engineering. At the age of 24, Howard Stark was recruited to be a consultant and manufacturer of weapons, scientific research and engineering for the SSR Division, taking with him his 15-year-old best friend, Antoine. Even though he was still very young, he actually lived up to the word "genius". He was not even in college and he was already doing and building amazing stuff with Howard. Together, they worked to provide the SSR and the US Government in general any sort of weapon or device they needed for the second world war.
We all know a little bit of the story of Captain America, the first super soldier, and how our two amazing scientists helped in the cause.
But this story is not about Antoine or Howard.. Not even about Steve Rogers. This story is about a miracle of sorts, for the Dumont family. Let me clear this up.
After the unfortunate events of the Second World War, Hydra, the death of Captain America, and the triumph of the end of the War, Howard and Antoine decided to take things slow, focus on their industries and projects and maybe settle down. Maybe. Antoine went back to Paris, to focus on his Industry, his work, discoveries, etc.
Later on, he married a French painter called Victoire Chevalier. After they married, everything seemed perfect. They were happy, they travelled around the world, they invented new things, discovered some others, whether it was just the two of them or with their best friends, Howard and Maria (Yes, flirty playboy genius Howard managed to get married and settle down too). Too bad the great things never last that long.
When the time came for Antoine and Victoire to form a family, it was not possible. Try after try after try, they couldn't seem to conceive a baby. No matter what they did, how many doctors they visited, nothing seemed to work. By 1970, their friends had managed to have their first (and only) son, Anthony Stark. Howard decided to name his son after his long life friend. Just with a little more... American touch.
Victoire and Antoine were devastated because they couldn't seem to have their family, to form the one they've always wanted. After medical tests applied to the both of them, nothing seemed to be wrong, everything was fine, no infertility, no problems with each's reproductive system (to not get into detail) no problem at all. Which made everything a lot more confusing.
I would be lying to you if I told you they didn't keep trying. They did. When finally, it became true. In 1977 Victoire was pregnant with their first baby. There was so much joy and happiness in the Dumont mansion. Friends and family were happy for them. But like I said before, nothing great lasts forever. After 7 hard months of pregnancy, the first born of the Dumont's was going to be born before due. Two months early. There was no way he (because it was going to be a baby boy) was going to survive. Even though they tried to keep him alive, the little fella couldn't resist long. All because his lungs were too weak; his heart was not strong enough. The little baby passed away in the arms of his parents in the hospital NICU.
The Dumont's were devastated. Victoire blamed herself for not being strong enough, Antoine blamed himself for not finding something or creating something for his son to live. Both had a rough time trying to come to terms with it. It took a couple of years, but they did it. They moved on and kept going.
Only for another pregnancy to happen, but this not even lasting more than 6 months.
In 1982, almost five years after the loss of their first baby, Victoire was pregnant again, but 5 months later she suffered a miscarriage due to stress at work. After the second loss, they didn't know if they should keep trying or not. They were way too scared to try, for the fear of losing another baby.
Now here, here's where the miracle happens.
Five years after the loss of their second baby, both Antoine and Victoire knew they were both now getting older and maybe they wouldn't have a chance to start their own family. So, just one last time, they tried. Yup, again. Although, now they keep their expectations really low. Like really low. Victoire was now 50 years old, so the chances of having a baby were almost nonexistent. It might've been a good idea for them to adopt. So they decided that if this didn't work, they would adopt a few kids so they could have their family. They still tried. Howard, Maria and now their 16-year-old son, Tony (sometimes when he could, while he was not busy being a genius at school. Yeah, he was/is a genius too, just like his dad) were by their side through all of this journey, since the first pregnancy. Deep down, underneath that I-don't-care-about-anything-but-me face, Tony wanted a little cousin, but it also was not really certain he would have one.
They were starting to conform and live with the fact they were not going to succeed, when after a visit to the doctor, Victoire was given the news that she was pregnant. Yes, again, at 50 years old, Victoire was expecting their third child. It was dangerous, yes. And it was going to be a high risk pregnancy, so they kept it very low-key from everyone. They were scared that the same thing that happened to the other two babies was going to happen to this one too.
Here's when I say that miracles happen.
On November 29 1987, at 2:50 in the morning, in Paris, France, a little baby girl by the name of Sophia Amelie Estelle Dumont was born.
Once she was born, it was too good to be true, like way too good. They checked everything about her. Lungs, heart, brain, every single organ if possible. Everything. Just to find out she was healthy. The healthiest baby they had ever seen.
There was so much joy with baby Sophia. And they got to share it with everyone now. The Starks were the first ones to know. Rushing to the hospital, not even them could believe the news. It was surreal. When they arrived, they wasted no time in meeting the new baby, the new addition to the family. To say that everyone was star struck was an understatement. Howard, who was now a serious, cold hearted fella, left behind that façade of a tough man when the little baby was placed in his arms. He developed a soft spot for this girl. A spot that was going to remain there for the rest of his life.
Now, after getting to "meet" her uncles, it was time to be held by the younger Stark. By the moment Tony held Sophia for the first time, he realized that she was not going to be his "little cousin", no. She was already more than that. She captivated Tony's heart so quickly, that he saw her like a sister of his own. The baby sister that he never got. Biologically, at least. In that moment, he promised to her and to the universe, or God or whoever was listening to him, that he was going to be with her, always, he would take care of her, watch over her, everything. He was going to love her, protect her and be the best big brother she could have.
Now, getting to the good stuff, let's bring you to the first years of Sophia's life. Shall we?
