One of the things Sophia noticed since arriving at Daylight, was that everyone spoke English. She wondered why that language. As all the other questions she had, she asked her uncle about that.
-Pourquoi tout le monde parle en anglais, oncle Pierre? (Why is everyone speaking in english, uncle Pierre?).- Sophia asked while walking in the garden with her uncle beside her.
It was Sunday, so it meant a day off for the students at Daylight and before lunch, Sophia and Pierre had decided to take a walk in the flower gardens at the facility. Yes, even if it was a secret organization to train deadly spies, they still had beautiful places around the compound.
-C'est une stratégie. Le fait que vous soyez formé pour être un espion, c'est que personne ne sait rien de vous. Pas même d'où tu viens. (It's a strategy. The point of you being trained to be a spy, is that no one knows anything about you. Not even where you are from.) -Pierre said while turning to look at Sophia. When he saw her paying attention and waiting for him to keep talking, he continued.
-Nous vous faisons utiliser l'anglais tout le temps que vous êtes ici, donc vous perdez votre accent. C'est un peu difficile, mais de cette façon, ils ne sauront pas d'où vous êtes ni pour qui vous travaillez. (We make you use english all the time you're here, so you lose your accent. It's a bit rough but that way they won't know where you are from or who you work for.) - It was true.
They making them lose their accents was a good strategy to avoid being discovered or having their cover blown. But it was also kind of like ripping apart something from them, from their identity, from who they were. But like everything else, it was part of the job. They needed to be no one to other people.
They kept walking in a comfortable silence until lunch time came and Sophia went to eat with her fellow spy friends.
9 Months later (January 1996)
It's already been a year since Sophia came to Daylight. Everyday, at her training and classes, she became better. Everything she did was remarkable. There was no room for mistakes in what she did. Her goal of becoming the best was still her priority and it was closer now. She made a couple of friends, the girls she shared her room with.
I can't say that everything was perfect. There were days where she would cry herself to sleep because of how tired she was. It was exhausting to do all of those tasks everyday. They didn't have time to rest between classes or training, the only time to rest was when night came and they had to go to bed.
Sometimes she wished everything went back to how things were before those people tried to kidnap her. She wished to go back to the days where she would go out with her parents to the cinema, or to the theater, how they would go to the park and have a picnic, or how they would travel. She missed her school. Her normal school. She missed Juliette, Laurie making her favourite food, or everyone that helped at her house. She missed her parents terribly.
Visits were allowed but not for long and not so frequent. Once, maybe every three months or two. It depended on how the training was going and how the student was doing in her classes and training, sometimes it lasted months for visits to be done.
She missed Tony too, a lot. Everytime she felt far away from him, she would touch the necklace he gave and run her delicate fingers through it. Despite them being under strict rules about almost everything, no one told her anything about her necklace. No one asked her to take it off, it was not a problem. So she kept it with her all the time.
It was now early in the morning and Sophie was already up, putting on her ballet uniform for her first assignment of the day. She was picking her hair up in a bun and tying it with a few bobby pins and a net.
