Ned's pov: The house seems unusually quiet today, even quieter than usual. I then realised that it was because the boys aren't here, but if they aren't here then where are they? Oh darn diddily doo, I know where now! I snapped my fingers in realisation and put down my bible and got up to go find them.
He got up and went outside and went straight next door. No, not to the Simpsons house but to your house. Ever since you moved in, you hit it off really well with your neighbours kids. The Simpsons children not so much, but the Flanders boys loved and adored you. He knocked repeatedly on the door. "Huh?" You said as you heard the noise. " Sorry, boys but storytime will have to wait" You smiled softly at them and patted their curly heard as you got up. "Aww" They both sighed in unison as you answered the door. It was Ned, just as you had assumed. "Good afternoon to you, (y/n), I was just wondering the boys were here" He said in his usual cheery way. "Good afternoon to you too" You smiled back at him. "And yes, they are here so come on right in" You led him into your home where the boys were both sitting there, enjoying themselves.
"Rod! Todd! I'd find you two here" He chuckled as he picked them both up. "You've both seen to confide a lot in (y/n) these days"
"We love her, daddy!" Todd giggled.
"She's like a mom" Added Rod. Ned looked at you when he said this and your face turned beetroot and you glowed with pleasure at the thought that they both like you so much. "Well, you coming home then?"
"Aww! We never finished our story yet!" They both whined. Just then, the oven timer pinged. "Ooh! That'll be the muffins!" You smiled. " muffins? " Exclaimed Ned in surprise. "Oh, I'm sorry, (y/n) but the boys aren't allowed sugar" You blinked as you thought this was strange of him to say so. "Oh come on, Ned, they're just kids. Besides, I only bake with a minimal amount of sugar and it's only a muffin each "
"Well-" He scratched the back of his neck, trying to think of an answer.
"They're only young once"
" Well...alright, just one each"
"Yay!" They both cheered as they stuffed their faces with your baked goods. They were both merrily chatting away to each other and eating, so Ned took a seat beside you and struck up a conversation.
"You know, (y/n), I really appreciate what you do for the boys, the way you listen and help them. It's been hard for them with their mother not being here"
"I know it is. I'm just doing my best to try and be a Good neighbour "
"Well you've certainly succeeded at that" It was reassuring for Ned knowing that his sons were with someone who loved and cared for them, a fellow Christian, though not quite so strict, and a motherly figure. "You know, they hang out with you a lot, and so-" He twiddled his thumbs a bit.
"Yes?"
" Do you think we should maybe get to know each other a little better? "
"Oh, I'd very much like that, but how?"
" Um...over dinner or something? That is only if you're interested "
You chuckled. "I'm very much interested. Thank you, Ned" You smiled as you both got up. You hugged the boys before they left and you gave Ned one as well and then they went home. You were happy now because you had managed to get a date with the most caring man you knew and you were insanely happy to be considered a mother figure.
