Selma #1

Today was a beautiful day at work for you. Everyday was a great day at work for you because you worked as a lifeguard at the Springfield beach! It was all sea, sunshine and smiles for you as you watched people enjoy themselves all day long and everyone loved you! You were definitely the best at what you did and this place wouldn't be the same without you.

You were sitting on your tower and rubbing some of that white stuff on your nose as it was looking kinda faded, when you heard a cry for help and you gasped. You looked through your binoculars to see a woman drowning. You quickly sprang from your seat and rushed off. Now this was the most rewarding part of your job, making sure everyone was safe. You ran to the water and dived in to save her. You caught hold of her and pulled her ashore. She was conscious but choking.

"Hey, look, a beached whale!" A youth yelled and pointed and you heard laughing from a group of four boys.

"HAW! HAW!" Laughed Nelson and pointed as he and the three other bullies crowded around.

"Oh, and which you little squirts is Adonis then? You're a little on the tubby side yourself, kid"  You said to the boy who looked embarrassed to be humiliated like this in front of everyone as you showed off your own strong muscles and they all felt dumb now.

"Now clear out of the way so that i can give this victim cpr" You tried to shoo them but then they started laughing again.

"You're gonna kiss her?" Eww!"  Why can't these idiots just clear off?

"Yes! And I'd have to do the same if it were any of you punks drowning! Give me some space"

"Eww! Let's get out of here!" 

Finally. You rolled your eyes at them and perform the kiss of life on this choking victim as everyone watched you in awe. She started coughing and then she got up. Some little kids were watching and they cheered for you cos you saved her life!

"Uugh" The woman groaned and rubbed her head. "That's the last i swim and smoke at the same time" She sighed and lit up another cigarette. She looked around saw you all watching her.

"You alright now?" You asked in concern.

"Yeah, just a little shook. Gee, thanks for saving me" She smiled. 

"It's my job" You smiled back and got her a towel.

"And thanks for defending when those kids were laughing"

"It was nothing" You shrugged.

You saw someone who looked just like the woman running down from the car park. She was gasping as she ran on account of the cigarettes she was smoking.

"Selma!" She cried. "Honestly, i can't leave you alone for FIVE MINUTES and you..." She then noticed you. "Are hitting it off with a hot lifeguard" Patty winked and clicked her teeth when she said this. Selma started blushing but you just chuckled. "Anyways, thanks for saving her" She muttered.

"All in a days work, Ma'am"

"Whatever. I'm gonna go off and sunbathe, wanna come?" 

"Uh" Selma thought as she looked at you. "I'll catch up later" 

You smiled and walked off and talked with her. She seemed so grateful that you had rescued her and she, a long with a lot of others, thought that your job was really cool. The beach was relatively quiet and so you got some peace to relax.

"So what is it that you do yourself, Selma?" You asked once you two had gotten to know each other a bit more.

"Well i have a job at the dmv, it's not much but it pays the bills. I don't see as much excitement as you do" She said unenthusiastically and lit another cigarette. You could tell that she really liked to smoke.

"Well maybe you don't get as much action, but we're both looking out for others and showing them how to apply safety" You tried to make her feel a little better.

The cigarette dropped out of her mouth in realisation. "HOLY SMOKES, you're right! I guess that DOES make me a sort of guardian" 

You laughed when she said this and continued talking with her. The day turned to evening and the hot midday sun cooled down and people, mainly the ones with kids began to leave.

"Selma, i'm packing the car right now" Her sister said gruffly. "Are you coming?"

"You know, i think i'll get a bus later"

"Suit yourself" Patty grinned and drove off. The beach was very quiet and so you decided to leave it for a while and so you two both took a stroll across the beach. This reminded her of her days with a certain ex who tried to kill her, but she didn't think about him, not when she was with you. You both got an ice cream each and just sat there on the pier together on that perfect evening.
