chapt 4

My heart thumps as I wait to send out this text. "Just do it" I whisper to myself right before sending it.

To shawn: hey shawn it's kai

I step back slightly and then quickly exit out of that app going onto twitter. Not much is going on in any of the groupchats I'm in so I decide to just get ready for work.

This shift is the last one before claire and I become roommates which should be fun, I pack up the last box so I don't have to later and I grab my keys.

Both my mom and sister are at work so I leave a note for them to find and I blast some music on my way to work. Jacob messages me and I reply with voice to text and a few minutes later sage messages me.

I pull up to work and wait a few minutes, the calm before the chaos happens. I look inside the shop and Claire's cleaning and dancing around, I turn off my car and go inside doing my regular work routine.

A few hours go by and shawn hasn't come in and he also hasn't texted me, claire doesn't say anything about him and our shift goes by and now it's the last hour.

We both decide to just clean up around the shop since it's been pretty quiet. Claire goes to the back to get more coffee beans so we can ground some in the morning and I start sweeping behind the counter.

The bell from the door rings and I look up seeing shawn come in, his hair messy and he looks tired. "Hey kai sorry i didn't reply I was busy at work all day" he says. I nod "it's fine, what can I get you?" I ask.

He looks up at the menu picking another random drink, claire comes back while I'm making it and they exchange in conversation while I'm finishing it. "An even 3 dollars" I let him know.

As usual he hands me a ten and tells me to keep it. "Thanks" I whisper. He leaves after promising to reply to my text. "Soooo?" She asks. "Nothing, I don't think it's going to go anywhere" I answer simply.

"Really?" She asks. I nod "yeah I think I just want to continue focusing on myself" I reply. She groans "kai you've been single for as long as I can remember" she says. "Uh I dated that girl a couple years ago" I point out.

She nods "true she was ok" she says. We finish cleaning up and then close the shop once the last person has left. We separate ways and go home for the night.

My sisters here for my last night here so the three of us order Chinese food, pack the rest of my stuff and then we watch a movie.

Around midnight we all go to sleep, right before I close my eyes both shawn and sage message me. I sigh closing my eyes and telling myself to go to sleep.

Both my sister and mom wake me up around 10am with coffee and breakfast already made. "Claire should be here in an hour with the moving truck" I let them know.

They both nod giving me a thumbs up and then we just wait for claire to get here. It only takes us an hour to put all of my things in the truck. "I can't believe you're moving out at 21" my sister comments.

"Well I need to spread my wings" I reply. We do a group hug before I get into the truck and i make sure i have everything. "Let me know when you're home" my mom says.

I nod waving bye and claire blasts some music on the way to the apartment. "So has shawn said anything?" She asks turning it down a bit. "Uh yeah he texted me last night before I fell asleep" I answer.

She looks at me with raised eyebrows "and? Did you say anything?" She asks. "Yeah, apologized for falling asleep and said that I'll be busy" I answer. "And what's going on with sage?" She asks.

My heart thumps "I don't even know anymore, one second she's wanting to flirt the next she's being distant" I say. "If shes going to be like that you need to set boundries" she says.

I nod taking in her advice "I know" I whisper. We get to the apartment and manage to get everything in there in less than two hours. Since we're both tired we just sit and watch tv for a bit.

Neither of us are working today, Harrison and Patrick are working all day for us. Claire's the manager and Patrick's the assistant so they switch off but I mostly work with claire.

Sage texts me shortly after I tweeted on my alt about moving and being tired. "Sage texted" I say. "Oh god, what?" Claire asks. "Said if I'm tired I should find someone to cuddle" I say. "That's cute but she needs to make it clear if she wants you" she says.

"I know she does" I say before putting my phone down. "You need to go on a date with shawn" she says. "What? Really?" I question. She nods confidently "yeah" she says.

A few seconds later he texts me asking me what I'm up to. "What do I say?" I ask her. "Tell him you just got done moving and you could really use some dick" she jokes. "I- CLAIRE" I say in shock. She laughs making me shake my head. I type out a reply and send it.

To shawn: not much, just got done moving into my apartment

We text back and forth for about an hour before he says he's coming to get me and to just wear something comfortable. "What does something comfortable mean?" I ask looking through the boxes of my clothes.

"Sweat pants and a hoodie with a bun" claire says from the couch. "Got it" I say changing quickly. While slipping my hoodie on I text him the address.

From shawn: be there in 15

About 15 minutes later the buzzer goes and I buzz him up. "Text me along the way" she says before I answer the door. He's standing there in sweat pants and a hoodie.  "Ready?" He asks. I nod "yeah let's go" I reply.

We go down to his car and he opens the door for me and I slide right in. "So I see you live with claire" he says. I nod and we talk about the move.

He just drives around San Diego for a couple hours and we get to know each other. "So you're 21 and you work at the coffee shop and you're in school?" He clarifies.

"Yeah, I'm getting a degree in education and a degree in english lit" I reply. He nods "that's awesome, I'm taking a business class" he says.

We talk a bit more "so I saw you take the bus like last week but I've seen your car, what's that about?" He asks. "Oh every so often I'll take the bus just to save gas" I reply.

He nods "interesting" he says. He drops me off an hour later and i just fall asleep after telling claire about it and getting a few texts from sage.
