*just hours before*

We were silent the whole ride back to the castle. We travelled at a slothful pace. The sun was scorching and I thanked the trees for their coverage.

When we finally returned, it was the middle of the afternoon. We dismounted Phillip, and Soren walked him over to a stable boy.

"Are you alright?" I stupidly asked him.

Clearly he wasn't.

He took a large intake of breath before replying. "(Y/n) I thought you were going to die."

"But I didnt," I reminded him, looking deep into those ocean eyes. "I'm here-"

"But I didn't know that!" He interrupted, his voice breaking mid sentence. "I thought it was going to be my fault, and I never would have told you...." His words slowly faded out.

"What?" I didn't know what to say.

"I just-"

"Oh thank god you guys are back!" Callum was running towards us, a grateful expression on his face. I was glad to see him but needed to know what Soren meant.

"Hey, Callum," I smiled.

"The other guards said it was a fail," the light dimmed from his eyes. "Why'd you guys stay out?"

I looked at Soren, a silent question on who should tell him, he nodded at me.

"Well," I began, "we found them..."

Soren and I had made our ways over to the throne room after telling Callum what happened. Callum told us how Harrow was making him and Ezran leave for the Banther Lodge in a couple hours, at sundown. He disappeared after our story to go pack and find Ezran.

The only people present were the King and the High Mage. Viren spoke for us both, "My King, we have not been able to capture the elves. Sundown is only an hour away."

"Sir if I may add, (Y/n) and I are planning the best ways to bolster defences." Soren sounded truely like a Captain.

King Harrow sighed, "it won't be enough." I couldn't believe he was just giving up- "I've accepted that tonight I may pay the price for our mistakes." His dejected voice pained me.

"Harrow don't give up yet, please." If I had to beg him to stay strong I would.

He seemed to be in anguish as he directed his speech at Soren and I, "thank you for your efforts this morning you two, but I need a word with Lord Viren."

Soren and I knew how to take the hint, we both bowed and began to leave.

When we reached the door Soren said a brief goodbye before jogging down the hall but the King interrupted my attempt to exit, "(Y/n) wait." He strode over to me, and before I could ask what he requested, Harrow wrapped his arms around me. In a hushed tone he spoke, "(Y/n) I hope you know, after all these years, that even though you aren't my daughter, I love you like one. And so did Sarai."

The words brought a tear to my eye and I hugged him back. "I hope you know Harrow, that you and Sarai saved my life. After all these years, I love you like a father." I added, "thank you," before we broke our embrace and I made my way out.

As I strolled back to my room, I was crossing through the West tower when I heard a door bang open and someone fall. I sprinted to the source of the noise, the sun was setting very soon. I didn't have my sword, but I always kept a dagger in my belt sheath.
