3rd Person POV
The birds chirp at Resembool, in the graveyard of the small town, Edward stood face-to-face with the man who abandoned him and his brother all those years ago... Van Hohenheim. His father.
Hohenheim: Hello, Edward. You appear to have grown some.
Edward looks away from his father in disgust. Not wanting to look at the man who turned his back on his own family any longer than he needs to.
Hohenheim: I spoke with Pinako. You tried Human Transmutation...
Edward: What makes you think you can show up like this!? There's nothing left for you here anymore!
Hohenheim: I noticed... Tell me, Edward. (Looks at where Edward's home once was) What possessed you to burn down my home?
Edward once again looks away from his father, knowing that he was busted that he burned down his old home after he and Alphonse committed the forbidden taboo.
Edward: (Looks away) After what happened we vowed to never look back. We did it as a symbol of our resolve-
Hohenheim: No you didn't. You were hiding the memory. You didn't want to be reminded of what you've done (Walks towards Edward) and thought you could erase the memory by destroying the evidence.
Hohenheim slolwy walks towards his son, pressuring his child to face the reality of the situation. He and Alphonse's "resolve" to burn down their childhood home was really nothing more than the two of them trying to cover up their shame of committing Human Transmutation.
Edward: You're wrong!
Hohenheim: It's just like a child who hides the sheets after he wets the bed. You ran away... And you know it.
Edward's eyes shake in horror, knowing that his father, no matter how much he wanted to deny it, was right. Edward ran, he couldn't bear the weight of preforming Human Transmutation on his own mother, so, in his panic, Edward just turned away from his father in anger.
Edward: I- You don't know a damn thing! You make me sick to my stomach.
Hohenheim watches as his son walks away from him in anger, not wanting a single thing to do with his father. It brought the elderly man... Pain... And sadness...
Hohenheim: He's exactly like I was when I was his age...
Hohenheim looks on in sorrow that his son has become exactly like him when he was younger, an arrogant child who always ran away from the truth...
Timeskip
Night falls over Resembool and the Rockbell Automail shop where Edward was fast asleep, awaiting for his train to take him back home to Central and back to his brother and friends.
As he slept however, Hohenheim slowly creeks open the door to Edward's room to check on his son.
Hohenheim walks over to his sleeping son, the sight of his child in such a peaceful state brings back a bunch of memories for the elderly man, memories of when Edward and Alphonse were babies and used to giggle and laugh whenever they got the chance to play with their father.
Hohenheim proceeds to kneel down and seemingly wants to brush his son's hair out of his face, however, he stops just short of doing it, seeming like he shouldn't do it.
After a while, Hohenheim heads back over to the door and leaves his son to sleep, completely unaware that Edward woke up as soon as the door closed.
After leaving his son to sleep, Hohenheim heads downstairs to talk to his old friend, Pinako Rockbell. Winry's grandmother.
