“Hey Sam, can I come in? We need to have a talk.” My Dad said while leaning in the doorway.
Shit shit shit “Uhm, yeah! Let me just make some room for you.” I said while racing around my room trying to pick up random articles of clothing.
“I just wanted to talk for a few minutes because what I have to say is limited.” He said as he crossed his arms. “So I’ll just stand.”
I immediately stood at attention and matched his gaze.
“Okay.” I said as I took a seat on my bed. “What would you like to talk about?”
“Your priorities. Is there a guy in town that you’re seeing?” He said and his eyes kind of squinted a lil as if he was trying to see the slightest emotional reaction.
“Yes, yes there is.” I answered honestly.
“Can he get you a job? Does he work at the bar in Bravo?” He said as he leaned against my huge, oak, dresser.
“No, no he probably can’t because he doesn’t work at the bar.” I said as I started to see where this was going. “And no he is just 18 and is trying to get a job at McDonald’s.”
“What were you doing at the bar last night?” He asked as his face went into shock.
“Drinking. You know how it’s been since college Dad. I’m just grasping at straws to have a lil fun and find a reason to exist.”
“I understand, but you know I don’t like that. You aren’t twenty-one therefore it’s illegal.” He said matter-of-factly.
“Can you honestly tell me that you have never drank before you were twenty-one back in the day?” I said with a smile.
“No, but I don’t want you to make the same mistakes I did.” He said with a caring tone.
“And I won’t. Just trust me. This is not a common occurrence.” I said.
“I know. I just worry that you are going to go all crazy and I have to deal with that.” He said with a pained smile. I knew he was referring to Shane.
“I won’t. It’ll be alright and hey. I am a lead singer in a band now.” I said trying to turn the tides of this ever drowning conversation.
“Congrats! When is your first record coming out?” He said jokingly.
“Hopefully someday. But we all have to start somewhere.” I said dreamingly.
“Get out of here.” My Dad said chuckling.
“My room. The other way around Dad.” I said playfully pushing him out.
“Alright, alright. See you at dinner in an hour.” He said.
“Yep, see you then.” I replied.
How I love my Dad. Eventually I will get my life straightened out.
Eventually.
