"Engineer Santiago, what should we do to the remaining clients?"
I sipped my ice americano before turning my face to Noelle. "Drop them"
Her mouth gaped open and hurriedly read the documents again for the 4th time today. "But they purposely asked for you to take in charge of the site. This project is a once in a lifetime opportunity!"
I stopped walking towards my office which made her to shut her mouth. Noelle looks scared and intimidated by my sudden aura. "I'm not going to Greece just to watch over some men who couldn't be trusted properly. My time is too precious for that"
I thought that would make her finally shut up, but it seems like Noelle is too passionate for her job as my assistant. "May I remind you, Engineer Santiago, that this is already your 15th time rejecting a project. If this goes on. . ."
I raised my right brow. "If this goes on? what would happen?" She bit her lower lip, refused to continue her sentence which made me sigh in exhaustion. Noelle is still a kid and inexperienced in this field. She's like my mom.
"Noelle, I know you're worried about me, but rejecting this project would do us good. And besides, I'm still handling three projects at the moment, so calm down and relax" Noelle frowned, hindi neto nagustuhan ang sinabi ko pero wala 'rin naman siyang nagawa kung hindi sundan nalang ako papuntang office.
It's been almost 12 years since I left the Philippines for good, and Noelle has been by my side for 3 years now. My life here in New York has been a huge leap to my dream of becoming an engineer.
As soon as I left the Philippines, I already went ahead and studied in Harvard for four years under Bachelor of Science in Physics to enhance my knowledge more. After graduating as a cum laude in Harvard, many companies have sent me a bunch of job interview letters, but in the end, I chose Grigg & Davis Engineers.
Mom is in Connecticut, enjoying her life and probably waiting for me to go home after three months of staying here in my apartment in NYC.
"What's the next agenda, Noelle?" I sat in my swivel chair and opened my laptop to check the blueprints once again, just to make sure that everything is under control.
"You have a meeting with the corporate leader of Verizon Communications, in the next. . . 10 minutes, then you'll have a lunch meeting with the board directors of JPMorgan Chase & Co." basa neto sa Ipad niya. "And dinner meeting with Director Davis"
I groaned when I heard his name. "Again? how many times is he going to ask me out for dinner? reject it, Noelle"
"We are running out of excuses, Engineer Santiago, you really have to attend this time"
I massaged my temples before nodding. I couldn't even look at her for a second because of these blueprints that was handed to me for finalization for it to take place next week. There's a lot of things that I've learned for the past few years of staying here in New York City besides the huge ass payment for apartments.
One, people is NY doesn't care about you or your wellbeing, second, the NY in media versus in real life differs from one another, it's almost deceiving how this city looks so much different in person, and third, always expect to see familiar faces around— and when I say familiar faces, I mean really really familiar faces.
