My heart shattered the first time I laid eyes on my nephew. Seeing him all alone, crying inside the hospital's nursery while other parents were busy swooning over their babies from outside the window—it was utterly painful.

"Don't cry," I heard Cyprus whisper in my ear and I felt his hand hold mine. "This is a happy moment. This should be a happy moment."

Tumango ako at mabilis na nagpunas ng mga luha. Huminga ako nang malalim at pilit na nagtaas-noo. Cyprus was right. It should be a happy moment kaya naman pilit kong isinantabi ang lahat at tinuon lamang ang atensiyon sa batang habang buhay kong mamahalin.

Cyprus called for the nurse and pointed at the bassinet in the corner of the room. He then repeated the name written on its label card—Kennedy Felix Cohen.

Kennedy Felix Cohen—reading his name felt surreal. I had to bite my lips to stop myself from sobbing.

Cyprus quickly fetched out his phone as the nurse picked up Kennedy with utmost care.

The nurse came up to us, and we were able to see Kennedy's face closely despite the mirror separating us. And at that moment, I found myself crying again. However, I found myself smiling.

"Oh my God! He's so cute!" I gasped, completely in awe.

"Psst! Psst! Kennedy, tingin ka rito kay Tito at Tita!" Cyprus started making random playful noises, trying to get the child's attention. It was so funny but endearing at the same time.

Kennedy just kept crying. Of course, he couldn't see or hear us. However, I was still hoping that he felt our presence. That he felt how happy we were that he was born. That he wasn't some mistake worth abandoning.

I wanted him to feel that even if his parents aren't around, he has Cyprus and me who will love and support him for the rest of our lives.

"I'm happy you exist . . . " I whispered underneath my breath as happy tears continued to flow down my face.

Cyprus and I kept gushing over Kennedy through the mirror. The nurse was starting to laugh at us, while I was sure that some people there found us annoying. However, at that moment, Cyprus and I were just too happy to care.

In the end, I had no choice but to call my parents and let them know what happened. They rushed to the hospital, in complete disbelief that they were grandparents. They had millions of questions, but instead of answering them, we just took them to the nursery.

That day, I saw my parents cry in silence. However, just like us, they were happy.

My brother hasn't been answering my calls for months. I grew tired of him so I stopped trying. That day, I tried calling him again. It was a shot in the dark, but the universe delivered.
