I'm doing it tonight!

I read the early morning message and smiled so wide that it hurt my cheeks. Shawn was snoring contentedly next to me, but that didn't stop me from waking him up by poking his shoulder.

He rolled over and looked at me with confusion since he was typically the first one up. "What's wrong, baby?" he asked as he rubbed his eyes.

"Fallon texted. She's proposing to Briya tonight!"

"For real?"

"Yes!" I said excitedly. "If it goes the way I expect it to, I want to do something for them."

"Like what?"

"Just something simple like buying a bottle of champagne and toasting their engagement, but I need to find out the details first."

I replied to Fallon.

When and where?

She texted back right away.

Here

I don't want to be in public

In case

You know

I sent another message.

Over dinner?

Fallon wrote back:

Yep

I'm ordering her favorites

I texted again.

After she says yes, do you want to meet us at that fancy new bar down the street from your apartment?

Champagne is on me!

Shawn was reading over my shoulder. "I'll buy the champagne since you don't have an income."

Fallon texted a minute later.

That would be awesome!

Think Brian and Meg might come?

I looked at my boyfriend. "Can you ask them? Don't tell them why since that might jinx it. Just see if they can meet up for drinks."

I sent a couple more messages.

We'll see if they can join.

Around 8:00?

She did a thumbs-up sign, and I sent one last text.

Good luck tonight!!!

"What happens if Briya says no?" Shawn asked.

"I guess we have drinks with Brian and Meg. I'll console Fallon when she's ready to talk about it. Do you think that might actually happen? They're so in love and happy together."

He looked away from me. "Not every proposal goes the way you think it will." He got out of bed and stretched, giving me an incredible view of his toned naked body. "I'm going to make coffee. You want some?"

I nodded.

"I'm going to feed Inky, too. Would you like breakfast? Maybe one of those egg bites we made yesterday?"

"Yes, please."

He pulled on some underwear and left the room. It made me sad when he hinted about possibly having a failed proposal of his own, but I wasn't going to pry. He'd talk when he was ready.

While I waited for my breakfast in bed, I sent my dad a quick text to say hi. He'd accepted my resignation better than my uncles, but it was obvious he missed working with me. I'd been making an effort to reach out to him more, and Shawn and I hosted him and Jennifer for dinner earlier in the week. We'd made paneer korma with basmati rice, which fit my boyfriend's dietary needs and wowed our guests because it was amazing. I still ate meat and gluten, but we'd learned to make dishes where those things were on the side or an add-in. I loved cooking with him, though my galley kitchen was too small for two people, causing us to frequently bump into each other.
