Caught in the Crossfire (At the Battlefield)

Beep! Beep! Beep!

Every single beep of the Spike currently deployed on the site seemed to send an uptick in all the Alpha agents running towards the aforementioned device.

There had been so much gunfire that it was honestly a surprise that they were made aware with a fair amount of time still in their disposal. Killjoyʼs tracking played a core part of it, which allowed the others to mobilize immediately.

Unfortunately, with the agents from the mirrorverse intervening and getting in between them and their goal, the operatives of the Protocol were forced to split ways in hopes of getting past their enemies and reaching point earlier than the others.

The urge to curse nagged at the back of Sageʼs head. She rarely let her anger take over, but the situation certainly tested her self-control. Her earpiece seemed to have gotten cut off, leaving her with a dead line and no possible communication from her allies whatsoever.

Last she heard was Reyna, Omen and Neon taking the brunt of the assault, while Astra, Killjoy and Cypher were keeping the rest of the enemies at bay with their abilities and equipment. Sage wasn't able to ask any further intel about the Spike, yet despite going in blind, she chose to risk venturing closer to the location of the beeping machine.

Inching close to an open entryway of a corridor, Sage slowed her steps as she heard the significant increase of the Spike's beeping. It was a loud and clear indication that it was nearing its detonation time.

At this rate, it was her safest bet to assume that the enemies probably evacuated themselves from the area already, which, if they did, would give her time to defuse the bomb. It was cutting it too close, but since when did this type of risk ever stopped her?

One deep breath later, Sage raised her Vandal and entered the main area of the site, turning left and right with all of her senses on high alert. With every step she took on the sandy pavement, the louder the beeping became. She was getting close to the literally ticking threat, and suspiciously enough, there was not a single hostile unit present on the scene.

Sage cautiously lowered her rifle and withdrew the defusing tool from her belt. There was no time left if she didn't start the process of deactivating the bomb, which left her no choice but to continue doing so without further checking if the surrounding space hid no enemy.

There was a high-pitch beep that echoed from the Spike once Sage began defusing it.

Bang!

Her heart leapt in her chest upon hearing the gunshot that sounded so close from where she was crouched at. It seemed to have come from behind her, and the sound of a body falling on the sand was not at all assuring.

What if that body belonged to one of her fellow agents?

Sage looked down on the small screen of the gadget she held, biting her lower lip when she realized it was halfway done. Stopping now just to check on who it was that had fallen or had shot them in the first place would only end up with her allowing the detonation to happen. There just wasn't enough time.

Closing her eyes and gripping the equipment tight in her hands, Sage refused to let herself move. It was a do or die situation anyway. And if she would die here because of another individual likely lurking behind her, then at least she could perish knowing that she tried.

It was only a moment of inner silence and brief darkness. A wordless acceptance that this may as well be her end when she deeply inhaled and closed her eyes for one and a half solid second.
