Recombinant 009
Pairings: Viper x Killjoy / Reyna x Sage / Fade x Neon
Warning: This chapter contains a mildly descriptive scene of a character seizing. Reader discretion is advised. The hatch of the aircraft was just rising up to a close as the agents turned away and made their way to their respective places in the transport. While Cypher stationed himself to one corner, where two monitors emerged from its hidden panels, Viper joined Sage at the cockpit to assist her in flying from their current location.
"Back to headquarters." Sage said as her fingers glided across the dashboard before them and entered the coordinates of their home base.
"The intel we retrieved is a bit questionable." Cypher mentioned from over their shoulders, capturing the attention of the two.
"What do you mean?" Viper asked, eyebrows furrowing as she met Sage's equally perplexed look.
"All of the files, decrypted or not, are all what we've been looking for."
"Is that not a good thing?" Sage asked, confused that Cypher seemed to see the development as something negative, regardless of such sounding like they've stuck a figurative gold mine.
"It is, it is. But," Cypher hummed in contemplation, rubbing his chin with a finger. "I can't seem to narrow down as to why it might not be."
"Cypher, out with it." Viper somewhat grunted, clearly not feeling patient enough to put up with the Moroccan's cryptic words. "Is it what we need or not?"
"It's what we came for, so yes, we can consider this mission a success." Cypher relented before sighing, head shaking. "I would have to do a couple more digging, though. I feel as if we're missing a much bigger picture."
Once they were sure Cypher had nothing else to say or to follow up with his initial comments, Sage redirected most of her focus on Viper, who was looking ahead as they flew the airborne transport. For a fair moment, there was nothing but silence between the two women, which was eventually broken by the healer.
"Viper, I know you have many things on your plate recently," Sage started with a light enough tone that made the chemist glance at her with a quirked eyebrow. "and this question of mine might be more suitable for Brimstone, but I would appreciate it if you could enlighten me yourself."
Viper clearly suppressed a sigh before she asked, "What's this about, Sage? Is it about Yu Zyn? Another check-up perhaps?"
"Not exactly a check-up. It's more on what I... read recently. From Brimstone's desk."
"Oh?"
"I did not mean to be so remiss at the time." Sage said with an apologetic tone before continuing to explain with, "I picked up the wrong file he asked me to look over. I thought it was the one containing the new itinerary he set for the people at the medical bay, but... Viper, is Yu Zyn truly alright?"
"What do you mean?" There was no visible reaction from Viper, and that clear fact alone nearly increased the stress Sage felt at the moment. She was hoping there'd be at least a telltale she would see that would give her an inkling on what she accidentally read. "The girl is fine. Beyond healthy, even."
Sage pursed her lips in brief thought, choosing to just be straightforward. "I read the report."
"And that report is?"
"It was a medical report about a patient's terminal condition. It was a little girl's papers, but there was no name, age, no personal info other than a few basic details such as her height, weight, gender." Sage maintained her eyes on Viper, whose face still didn't give anything away. But, she did notice the way Viper subtly straightened her posture, the fingers wrapped around the handles of the yoke another sign she failed to conceal.
