July 24th- Sunday.
Three weeks later.
"Lieutenant colonel Bai, you have a phone-call in your office. Lieutenant colonel Bai, you have a phone-call in your office." The jarring loudspeaker of training camp number one, rumbled all over its ground.
Bai Luo Yin gestured the 'okay' sign to the surveillance camera to his right, and the jarring voice immediately quieted down.
He turned to face the soldiers that clung onto crowbars, extracting their energy by pushing their upper bodies up to pass the steel rod; performing the fourth set of pull-ups.
"Okay! finish this last rep, and you are all dismissed."
During the past couple of hours, he trained the four captains in his battalion. The four aspired for a promotion to a higher rank. This kind of HIT-like training, after-hours under the scalding sun; helped them improve their stamina, and ability to endure extreme and uncomfortable summery weather.
It was a known rule to everyone in lieutenant colonel Bai's vicinity: During daily training, or after hours, doesn't matter. No phones allowed on the training ground under any circumstances. Not even his.
The soldiers were ordered to leave their phones in their dormitory, while he left his own at his office. The people closest to him received the telephone number of his office, and the headquarters; just in case of an emergency.
However, the way Gu Hai saw it; every time his susceptible heart nudged at his chest, yearning to hear that lovable voice of his baby; he considered it to be an emergency.
And so, Bai Luo Yin blissfully got used to the fact that ninety-nine, point nine percent of the times the loudspeaker announced that a phone call patiently waited for him at his office; it was Gu Hai hankering to chatter, and ask him about his day.
Like any other day, he quickly dismissed the captains, and hurried back to his office.
"Da Hai?"
"Baby, what are you doing?"
"I just finished training the captains, I am heading home soon. Did you finish working too?"
"No, not really," Gu Hai admitted. "I have a last-minute business meeting in Langfang. Do you want me to drive through the base, and pick you up? We can go to the meeting together..."
"How long will the meeting be?"
"About two or three hours."
"Mmmm...I think I rather go visit my dad."
"Okay babe, will see you at home around ten then. Be safe, if you are drinking, and need a driver, don't flag down a taxi; call me."
"Okay, okay." He shook his tired head with feigned annoyance; but the contented smile on his face revealed his true feelings.
It was this kind of "torture" that he had to "suffer" on a daily basis. A caring husband that called him multiple times a day to check if he ate, drank, masturbated, felt any discomfort or pain somewhere. Suggesting to come pick him up, suggesting to come take him with him, and fit him in his pocket like a mama kangaroo.
A loving, yet extremely sticky behavior that the bystanders would call radical and unhinged. But for these two, the sticky sweetness simply worked.

When last rays of sun dimly lightened the crooked sidewalk of the old street, Bai Luo Yin pushed open the gate to his father's house with a decrepit creak.
The gate had yet to fully close when a strong mouthwatering smell of baking infiltrated his nostrils. His gaze naturally diverted toward the kitchen's open window.
