Bella's P.O.V.
I startle backward when Lucien tells me his Grandfather offered to make me immortal. What-the-Actual-Fuck? I don't want to be immortal, do I? To watch everyone I love age and die? That sounds terrible! I start shaking my head and backing up in my seat until I feel the door against my back. I see Lucien's shoulders slump a little and I understand this was a big moment for him, offering to make me like him so we can live together for all of eternity. I lean forward and grab his hand. "Listen, we only started dating a week ago, and don't get me wrong, it's been an amazing week! I'm still trying to wrap my mind around who you are and who your family is, so adding something as monumental as making me immortal threatens to short circuit my synapses." He remains silent, so I bring up something that's been worrying me since our first kiss. "Lucien, how do you know I'm the one for you? You are a magnificent angel, your Grandfather is God Himself. I'm just Bella Parker from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. I'm not worthy of such company. I kind of feel like I'm walking around in a fairy tale and I'm going wake up soon. When I do, all of this," I indicate us by sweeping my hands in a circle, "is going to disappear."
He brings my hand to his lips, kissing the back of it gently. "Bella Parker, from Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, you are destined to be my soul mate," he tells me quietly, like he's afraid if he adds any inflection in his voice, I'm going to run away. "I asked my father why I felt such a strong connection to you, how after only one evening, I knew I wanted to spend your life with you. You know what he told me?" he asks, looking into my eyes. When I shake my head he says, "He said, and I quote, 'once a Celestial meets their soul mate, their connection is immediate and eternal.' He also told me it is the same for you, that you should feel bonded to me...do you?"
Do I? What exactly does that mean? I try to imagine not having Lucien in my life, think about another man touching me, making love to me, and holding me next to his heart. I feel a strong revulsion when I imagine that scenario, and it convinces me what Lucien is saying is true. He is my soul mate and we are bonded forever, just like his parents. With that realization, I smile at him broadly. "I do," I tell him. "The thought of not having you in my life or allowing another man to touch me makes me physically sick."
He smiles a megawatt angelic smile at me. "See? So someday, if you want, my Grandfather has offered to make you immortal so we can be together forever. If you choose not to be, then when you die, we will be reunited, but we can only exist together in Heaven or in Hell."
I look at him, his earnest and loving expression soothes my nerves. "You make it sound so easy and I
have a choice, but how can that be if I am predestined to be your soul mate?"He furrows his brows at me. "Pretty much everything is your choice. If you want to go to college, if you want to have this baby," he puts his hand gently on my abdomen, "if you want to become immortal. The only thing you don't have a choice on is being my soul mate. That was scripted by my Grandfather before you were even born." He sits, looking at me for a moment. "I hope I am enough for you," he says so quietly I have to strain to hear him. Then it hits me. He's feeling as insecure about being everything I need as I am feeling about me being good enough for him. Good Lord, we are a couple of jackasses.
"I think," I begin, playing with his fingers, "that you and I are a couple of idiots." When he startles at that I laugh and continue. "We are so worried about proprieties and doubting we're worthy of each other, when really, it's already been decided by the Supreme Being. All I'm asking is for you to give me time to come to terms with everything since we've only been dating a week. I know how you feel, I love you too, but neither of us is ready for forever."
Lucien nods and smiles at me, a gentle and serene smile. "You are absolutely right except for one thing," he tells me.
"Yeah? And what is that?"
"I am one hundred percent ready for forever, but I'm a lot older than you. I will give you all the time you need." After a moment he asks, "Are you ready to come inside and deal with my over zealous parents?"
I look at him and nod. "Oh gosh, you haven't seen your mom in centuries, have you?"
