Arc 2 Chapter 22: Won't Work

3rd Person POV:

{Edwin, these snacks are poisoned. It's special. It only works for blessed people.}

He smirked inwardly. 'Interesting.. They already made their move. Yuna should've tested them, but since the poison only works for blessed people, she wouldn't find anything. Is it deadly?'

{Yes. Everyone who took it died without exception. You should be fine though, thanks to the enhancement of the blessing from the system. But you will be in pain for a few hours and cough up blood should you eat it.}

'It's fine.. I want to show them.. That I won't ever die from poison', he answered and watched as Yuna placed everything on the table in front of him with a gentle smile while mentally preparing himself to eat the snacks.

Once everything was ready, he first casually and elegantly took a sip of the tea. After he put down the cup, he lifted his hand and calmly took one of the cookies. He put it all into his mouth in one go and ate it. I should've looked unruly, but with the way he did it, it still looked elegant.

He took another sip of tea afterwards and swallowed it all. Right after, he flinched and the teacup fell from his hand onto the ground, shattering from the impact. He coughed loudly and blood started flowing out of his mouth, staining his clothes red. He felt pain all over his body.

Yuna instantly started panicking. "Kendric!", she screamed, resulting in the door being hastily opened afterwards. Hernan looked at him with a shocked expression and a pale face.

'Dammit, I thought he wasn't here right now...', Kendric thought while feeling faint and supported himself with the help of the table, coughing up more blood afterward.

Hernan immediately ran to him and picked him up into his arms. "Call a doctor!", he said hastily and put him gently onto the bed. Yuna instantly snapped out of it and ran away to call for one.

Hernan cared for him and cleaned him while whispering that everything will be alright. Kendric wanted to calm him down, but he couldn't even talk right now. 'I didn't want him to see this...', he thought while letting out a sad sigh inwardly. 'I'll have to compensate him by a lot after this..'

After a few minutes, Yuna came into the room with a royal doctor behind her. Her face also did not look good. The doctor immediately began checking his entire body in various ways to determine what happened. After he was finished, he sighed and looked at the two servants. "There's good news and bad news, which one would you like to hear first?"

"The bad one, please", Hernan answered instantly with anxious eyes.

"He was poisoned by a special poison. It only works on blessed people and is tasteless and odorless. It's deadly as well, so not one person has survived being poisoned until now. And that's where the good news begin. The prince's blessing is stronger than normal. It resisted the poison, but he will be in pain for a few more hours before returning to normal. There's also nothing we can do to help."

Both of them took a sharp breath hearing the first half, and released it relieved after he finished talking.

"Thank God..", Hernan whispered, squeezing his prince's hand in the process.

To stay on the safe side, the doctor stayed with them until Kendric's pain faded away.

A few hours later, he was already able to sit up and talk normally, even though his voice was still a bit hoarse.

"Doctor, thank you for coming here. I feel better already though, so you don't have to stay here. Please tell Imperial Mother and Imperial Father that they don't have to worry, since my blessing is so strong.", he said while smiling at him innocently.

The doctor was getting goosebumps, not really knowing why. "Sure, I will do that, your highness. Rest well", he answered while bowing and walked away as fast as he could.

Once he was gone, Kendric clicked his tongue. "Her influence is really big.. She even managed to get the royal doctors on her side..", he grumbled while smirking.

Hernan looked at him. Feeling his gaze, he looked back at him. "Oh yeah, why were you here? I thought you had gone to collect information."

He sighed."From that question.. I can guess what happened. Did you know about the poison?", he now asked with a grave expression on his face.

Kendric's face went serious as well. "Hmm.. Let's say I expected something like this, but not now? So, when she brought in the snacks and I had this weird feeling, I was a bit confused.. But honestly, I knew it wouldn't kill me, so I wanted to show them.. That I won't die by such means", he answered with half-truths

Hernan hugged him tight. He was relieved, but at the same time sad and angry. "Don't ever do such a thing again, even if you would survive. Please?", he whispered. He didn't want to fight with him, so he pleaded instead of screaming at him.

Kendric smiled sadly. "Okay.. I promise.", he answered and wanted to hug him back, but a cough brought them out of their little world.

"Now that everything is cleared up, what should we do now?", Yuna asked.

"Nothing. We wait until the maid comes here. You guys should go back and do your things. I'll rest a bit. She'll come here by tomorrow night."

They both nodded and left the chamber. Hernan didn't really want to at first, but he knew that the information was important, so he still left.

Once he was alone, he sighed. 'Seriously though, why is she in such a rush to kill me off. I just arrived.', he thought but then he realized something. 'Wait... Pancake, does the royal family of the empire not have a blessing?'

{They once had. But their ancestors angered their God who blessed them, so it was revoked. The blue eyes passing down from generation to generation are an after effect of the blessing, but no power had been left in their bodies.}

'That's good then.. Wouldn't want to be blocked by something like that while taking my revenge.', he answered with a smirk. 'Kendric and his family had to suffer a lot because of that Empress, and the crown prince is no better than his mother. They will both pay.. The second prince never really did anything, so he's also safe. I'll send father and son away and let the Female Lead rule the empire. They both won't be allowed to have any children though.'
