The Fountain
Kayline Mckenzie
" You lied to me! You promised me-"
" You are a monster!"
" How can you sleep at night, knowing what you are and what you did?"
" Freak!"
" You missed the target, now do it right before I send you to the Box."
" You failed."
" Machine!"
" You are just a weak little girl who thinks she's the-"
"Tell my family that I-"
Many voices fill Kayline's head attacking her from every corner.
" Kayline?" A frightened peaceful voice enters her chaotic mind. She turns around and sees Chris, much younger, tears streaming down her face, mixing with blood from her eyebrow. Kayline kneels and faces her.
" What's wrong, Chris? What did you do this time?" Kayline says before thinking. Her words fly out of her mouth taking over. She didn't want to say that, so why did she?
" I talked back to my instructor." Young Chris sniffs and runs her arm under her arm wiping her nose.
" She told me that talking back is a sign of bad attitude and performance. She told me that I would end up dead in the streets if I continued." Instead of comforting her, Kayline's mouth runs off again.
" Christina, I told you to not do that, now look what you have done. You know better than to talk back."
" I'm sorry, Kay. I'm so sorry." Chris cries some more.
" You better be, that can't happen again Chris, do you understand me?" Kayline is taken back at her own hostility. Chris nods.
" You must be silent and obedient, or this will be the consequence every time."
" MONSTER!" A voice yells one more time. Kayline wakes up, sweat dripping from her chin. As soon as she opens her eyes, the pain from her abdomen is relevant once again. The doctors have had her bed rest for the past two days. Little do they know, that her body is used to the damage and has been tampered with technology to develop an incredible immune system. She could tell that she was already getting stronger. Her itch to get started on the mission was only growing stronger.
Her nightmare played over and over in her head. She thought of Chris' bruised face lined with tears. Did Kayline really tell those things to her when she was younger? She runs her hands across her face, hoping to hide her shame from the world and herself. She wanted to call Chris immediately just to hear her voice. But that was impossible. Not just because of the mission, but Kayline didn't have a phone at all. Wow, I am so unprepared, she thinks to herself. This all happened so fast.
Kayline throws off the covers and slowly lets herself off the bed. The Queen gave her permission to walk around the castle, with supervision of course. The Doctors said that small walks would help Kayline get better.
The Queen also gave her some new clothes, meaning not torn or laced with blood. And in Kayline's book, they are perfect. It's a smooth coral shirt with fuzzy cotton inside her sweatpants. The outfit feeling comforting on her aching wounds. Yet, she needs to look around the castle. From what she has read this castle gets renovated twice a year to deal with its degrading age. Which means that the royal family gets to decide how to decorate their home. Finding small things like a certain painting or a piano, can tell a lot about a person.
