Act of War
Christina McKenzieWhen Noah, Kay, and Chris return to the house, it's locked. Dark Moon must've taken it back when they left. Thankfully, Kay's truck was still here with all of their belongings packed in the back.
" Well, we got some information. Just some stuff about plagues and how they are spread." Chris says sarcastically. Kay doesn't listen to a word she says and walks to the back of the truck. Chris gives Noah a look, asking what's going on with her. Noah has his hands in his pockets and shrugs, looking back at Kay. No doubt that he is handsome. Especially right now, with his tux on and loose with the moonlight hitting his hair just right.
It's just, Chris doesn't know. He seems... damaged. No offense to him, but she's more into... not damaged.
" You know... we pretty much wasted an entire night, learning what we already know." Chris says even louder to get Kay's attention. However, her face is still focused on the laptop she got out. Chris throws his hands up in the air and settles them on her damaged dress.
Chris turns to walk back to Noah's house but then she hears a noise from Kay's computer. Chris turns around to see a smile spread across Kay's face. The voices on the computer seem vaguely familiar. Chris speed walks up to Kay and sees her screen. It's a video of the office they were just in with the Doctor.
Except now, Emberly the Queen, is there, pacing while Doctor Wu is sitting on her desk, with her hands woven together and her chin is settling on top. Chris yanks the computer from Kay's grasp to get a closer look. This video is live.
" How'd you do it?" Noah asks Kay in bewilderment.
" Easy. When I was pretending that I was searching for bugs, I was actually placing one. I figured there was no way that she would give us any major details, and nothing is better than seeing the real thing up close in action." Kay says, with a sly smile on her face. Chris grabs her sisters arm and shakes her.
" You are amazing!" Chris shouts through her teeth. Kay simply shrugs her shoulder and grabs a duffle bag. A voice pops up on the video after a long time of silence.
" Before we start, your security team came by to check for bugs so that we can speak in complete privacy. One of the girls said that her name was Sierra and she had any problems, to contact her immediately." Doctor Wu says. Her voice sounds more gruff on video, and quite frankly so does her attitude. Chris gives Kay a look and she gives her a side glance.
Hopefully they can trust Her Majesty with this. The Queen looks around the room until it looks like she can see them. Her eyebrows twitch, just the slightest, willingly or unwillingly, letting them know that she knows where the bug is.
" Oh really? That's great. It's good to know who you can trust nowadays." They all kind of exhale as they know they can trust her.
" I'm gonna go change. Chris pay attention. It's recorded but hopefully you can get a good fresh look at it." Kay says to her.
" I'm coming with you." Noah says. Chris moves her gaze from the computer and Kay turns back around. They both give a confused and what-the-heck stare at Noah, purposely making him feeling uncomfortable. Even in the moonlight, Chris can see heat rise up to Noah's cheeks. He rubs the back of his neck and lets out a small chuckle.
" O-obviously not with you, with you. Just coming with you to the house, is what I meant-"
" Ugh, just go Noah, before you embarrass yourself even further." Chris says as she returns her attention to the computer.
" Yeah." He says immediately after Chris, desperate to leave the conversation, as he walks around the truck. Chris admits, she was hesitant at first, but she thinks she's going to like this guy.
Chris sees Kay in her peripheral vision. Kay runs her hand through her blonde hair, letting out a sigh and makes her way to the house. What's up with her? One moment, she defends and puts her life in Noah's hands, and the next she argues with him like he's her mom, saying she can't go to a friends house.
Not that they would ever know what that's like to have a mom. But Chris can assume that all girls have a complicated relationship with their mother. Chris knew that she would have. Chris' personality is just too difficult.
" So, you have a girl in your custody? A young girl named Magdalene Lister? And you say she's cured?" The mention of Maggie's names tunes in Chris's focus. The Queen has somewhat relaxed and is now sitting in a chair.
" Yes. Some of my men acquired her, found her weak and almost on the brink of death, when they also found a vile. They took a chance and slowly she was a healthy little girl again. And of course, you may have our permission to test her blood and test her to see what kind of cure was used. And maybe test it on other patients." The Queen states. Chris couldn't help but let out a snort when The Queen told a lie of how Maggie actually got healed. Chris knows Kay went through some crap to save her. She deserves some credit. But welcome to theirlives of secrecy and lies.
" Your Majesty, with all due respect, I have never seen a disease like this before in my life. It's as if all of the plagues were mashed into one. Even though they basically cancel each other out, the disease has found a way to coexist with each other." The doctor tries not to rush her words. The Queen takes in some of this information.
" What are you implying, Doctor Wu?" The Doctor hops off the desk and starts to pace in front of it.
" Nature has a natural code. Nature has balance. Like the ying-yang symbol. It represents good and evil, but you need to have both. There is a natural order, a natural balance in everything, and if there is no balance, everything goes tip side. What I'm trying to say, Your Majesty, is that there is no natural order or balance in whatever this plague is. I'm saying that's it's man made." Chris lets out a shaky breath. She wraps her bare arms around her stomach. The brisk air goes against her arms and keeps her anxiety flared up. Her stomach seems to rise with every passing second of anxious blank space. Please don't be right, Please don't be right. Just let this be a freak of nature...
" Biological warfare." The Queen breaths out.
