The Stained Fortress
Kayline McKenzie

" You have no idea how grateful I am to you for saving my boys. What do you want? Money, clothes, a new house? Anything for you, darling." Kayline hears William chuckle behind his mother.

" Mother, I'm sure she gets the point. She's recovering and you don't need to overwhelm her." William insists. Kayline lays her hand out.

" Your Majesty, it's greatly appreciated, but I don't need anything, you've already taken care of me. I'll just be on my way." Kayline sees Ryker mutter underneath his breath.

" What was that, Your Highness?" Kayline asks acting under innocence. Ryker just smirks, catching her sassy remark.

" Surely, we can offer you some sort of a reward." The Queen pleads. Kayline looks around at the Royal Family. It sure is different than looking at them instead of through a newspaper.

" How about this. Let me get better and maybe by then, I'll have an answer." Kayline says as nicely as possible, hoping to not seem like a conniving beggar. The Queen suddenly goes pale and stumbles across her words.

" Yes. Yes of course, darling. Take-take all the time you need to heal. We shall let you rest. Ryker don't forget your meeting at two." The Queen says as she starts to move her family out of the hospital room. Ryker raises his hand in goodbye to his family as he says, " Of course, mother. Thank you for reminding me." He says the last part in clipped sarcasm as he looks at Kayline. She smiles, relating to him.

" Don't think this conversation is over. You just told me that you are from over the wall. My trust in you, just went down 80 percent." Ryker says. He turns to leave but Kayline thought she could have a little fun.

" And what about the other 20 percent, Your Highness?" Kayline flirts. Ryker stops and turns his head. His face is stone except for a small giveaway. A hesitant smirk on the corner of his lip.

" I'll let you figure that out, Miss Emma Oaklyn." He flirts back. He walks away, looking more brooding in his royal gear. His navy dress pants and his decorated ivory blazer compliments his personality. Just a little bit.

Kayline feels a sharp pain in her abdomen and realizes that she was still shot and that she should sit down. She lays back down on the hospital bed and lets out a sigh. She tries to imagine what Chris would say right now. Probably something like, " You are one day on the mission, and you managed to get shot. Gah! That's why you need me with you, you idiot."

Kayline laughs to herself and then becomes silent, realizing that her sister's laugh wasn't with her. And that Kayline was alone. She takes a deep breath. She can do this. She can do this without her sister. But she doesn't want to.

Kayline feels her body begging for sleep, and for once, Kayline willingly gives in and closes her eyes.
