The Journey Begins
Kayline McKenzieChris finds Kayline on the roof. A sunset slowly goes through Kayline's mind. She stayed up here longer than she hoped. But she also wanted to steer clear of Chris. Kayline couldn't face her and she didn't feel like talking to her or seeing her. Maybe it will be easier if Kayline justs leaves. But it's not the easiest thing. Kayline knows that if she just drops everything and leaves, then she will be too focused on trying to contact Chris.
Kayline keeps her eye on the horizon, admiring the city lights and people roaming the streets. They all seem happy and free. A man grabs a little girl and throws her in the air. Kayline doesn't know if she can hear the girls laugh from here, or if it's just her imagination.
The guard from the cave enters into Kayline's mind. She can still feel his clutch on her ankle. His scream and his face slowly melted as if it were wax to close to a flame. Kayline feels air coming out of her nose shakily.
Chris sits down next to Kayline and lays her head on her lap. Kayline may have been mad at her, but that is one thing so great about a sister. She can punch her in the face and still have a friend for life.
" I'm sorry I punched you." Kayline hears her whisper. Kayline let's herself smile. She strokes Chris' hair, still stiff from all the hairspray from the ball.
" Eh, I mean you could've laid out all your anger on Lister, but I'm not being picky." Kayline feels Chris' chuckle on her leg.
" Well yeah, I mean apparently I can do all the punching at him when you're gone. " They go silent. Kayline hears a sniffle from Chris and she sits up. The moonlight bounces off her tears and she wipes them off.
" You're going to be gone a long time aren't you?" She asks quietly. Kayline pulls Chris closer to her and gives her a hug.
" I don't know Chris. I just- I don't know and it scares me. It honestly does. But-"
" I understand. Someone needs to stand up for our kingdom." Chris murmurs. Kayline nods. She looks back to the city and further down the horizon and see multiple cities farther away, separated yet so close. This is their home. Kayline will not let her slip up kill everyone.
Chris holds Kayline tighter and she brings Chris closer. Kayline's going to miss her. Kayline wipes a tear from her cheek and bring Chris out of her embrace so that she can see her face.
" Just make sure that you get in a couple of punches for me. I want to let Lister know that I am still here somehow." Chris smiles and stands up. Kayline reluctantly stand up with her. Kayline is leaving, and she doesn't know how long it will be till Kayline will see her again.
They make their way downstairs and Kayline sees Noah talking to his mom. Believe it or not, Tracy looks happy. All of her stuff is packed and ready to go. The Academy came by earlier today to take all of her furniture and heavy stuff.
" Oh Noah, I'm so excited. We finally get to see the Kingdom's capital!" Noah scratches the back of his neck and laughs hesitantly. Kayline leans against the island with her elbows supporting her body. She cranes her neck to the left and decides to make him feel more uncomfortable.
" Yeah, Noah! You finally get to see Landow. I mean, I think you'll fit right in. Plus there will be plenty of girls there to meet." Kayline wiggles her eyebrows. Kayline hears Chris' snicker and Noah sarcastically laugh along with them. Tracy just remains confused.
