Chapter 28

Careful what You Wish For
Kayline McKenzie

             Christina and Kayline stand in formation and bow to Her Majesty. Noah hurriedly does the same. The Boss looks around the messy floor and shattered porcelain. Other agents surround them and start to take evidence, starting with Edna, who still lays dead on the floor.

                    " I would have left you alone, McKenzie but you haven't checked in or given a solid report in a week agent. Report." The Boss said. She looks the same as always. Her black hair is in a smooth ponytail, her eyes possibly sharper than ever. She moves her gaze to Noah. Oh, crap. Kayline doesn't know what she would do. Would she stand in front of him, willing to go against the only parent figure in her life, or would she let Noah suffer?

                    " Who is this young man and what is he doing in your house?" She asks sternly, before Kayline gets a chance to report. The Boss' eyebrows scrunch together, almost creating the illusion that she only has one.

                     " Oh, um, my name is Noah-" Noah started to say.

                     " I know who you are Noah Johnathan Lister. I know everything about you and your fun little side jobs." The Boss focuses her short lived attention back to Kayline. Noah's gaze reaches her and Kayline shoots him an apology.

Kay won't let Noah die because of her actions. She starts to move towards him, but Noah stand straights and looks at The Boss with determination. Kayline can already tell that The Boss' horrendous personality is getting to him. The Boss has this aura, where people are either scared to death or they seek her approval on anything and everything.

                      " Ma'am the situation was dire and I needed help-" Kayline say as she gets closer to Noah, but the Boss looks at her and with her eyes orders Kayline to stand down. She reluctantly obeys.

                      " Then you should have called in for reinforcements. Not some inexperienced mob boy." The Boss spats. Noah clears his throat.

                     " Um, the inexperienced mob boy is standing right here." Noah replies. The Boss snaps her head back to him and Kayline fears for his life. The Boss walks up to him. She is a bit shorter than Noah but that doesn't stop her. The Boss holds her head high.

                     " As an errand boy, you should know when to keep your mouth shut." The Boss' words slip from her mouth like poison.

                     " Call me boy one more time and we will finally discover what the world is like when you are finally quiet." He responds just as harsh. Chris and Kayline look at each other. Kayline doesn't know what she will do if The Boss kills him. That's why Kayline can't let her feelings in the way. Noah looks at Kayline, with fierce intensity, then back at The Boss.

                     " Look, don't blame Kayline for this." Goosebumps travel through Kayline's arms. Hearing Noah saying her real name makes her heart skips a beat.

                     " No one will ever be prepared to hear what is going on, let alone deal with it. But Kayline handled it like a real agent or whatever. She did what she needed to do to prove herself. And if you can't see that, then maybe you need to take a look over that mountain that is your ego." Kayline's mouth drops open. Chris tries to cover her smile, but fails. Kayline doesn't think anyone has ever talked that way to The Boss.
