The Way I Lie

Chapter 9

Kayline McKenzie

Kayline walks into the Lister's home. The interior is a little bit outdated, but it gives the room character.

" I'm sure Maggie is upstairs with her older brother, telling him every little detail that has happened for the 3 months he has been gone." Tracy laughs

" What has he been doing that keeps him away so long?" Kayline asks.

" Well during the summer, he goes over to the farming districts and farms, but during spring, fall and winter, he stays here for mining." Tracy says as she gets the dinner ingredients out.

Kayline nods her head as in saying, oh, that makes sense. Tracy hands her an apron and she helps her cook dinner.

Even though Kayline is thee top notch spy, knows 13 languages not including the dead languages, and knows where the most vulnerable artery is, she has no idea how to cook.

The recipes and the patient it takes, does not sit well with Kayline. Are you supposed to stand there and wait for it to be done? You can do so many more things, rather than stare at a pot for 30 minutes. Kayline sets the table as Tracy finishes up a few things.

" Maggie! Noah! It's time for dinner! We have a guest so please behave yourself!" Tracy shouts. Kayline hears the upstairs explode with running footsteps. She can hear Magdalene's shriek as her brother lifts her off the floor.

He carries her all the way down the stairs. He is wearing a white tank top, showing a tattoo on his right shoulder. Kayline doesn't t know what it is. He looks familiar, she swears she never forgets a face. She doesn't see his face for a few seconds. She only sees his messy brown hair- No way.

Sure enough, when he lifts his head, it's the guy from Landow, a few days ago. Kayline nicknamed him playboy. Chris couldn't stop talking about him and Kayline couldn't stop thinking about him.

Kayline had to close her mouth, rather than leave if hanging there like a monkey does from a tree. Noah Lister, as she now knows his name, scrunches his eyebrows at Kayline as if he recognizes her, too.

" Kids, this is-" Tracy begans to say, but gets interrupted as Magdalene jumps into Kayline's arms.

" Rosie! Are you joining us for dinner?" Her smile is contagious and Kayline couldn't help but laugh.

" I sure am, but as long that's okay with you." Kayline looks at her, asking permission. She tries to keep her eyes on Magdalene, avoiding eye contact with playboy behind her.

Magdalene nods her head really fast and then gets down. She pulls her brother over to Kayline. He stills seems perplexed and confused, and she does her best to give him a smile. A smile that says, I'm not the girl you saw a couple days ago.

" Rosie, remember my brother I was telling you about? Well this is him. Noah, this is my new friend Rosie. She just moved in next to us!" He shakes his head a little bit as if he just woke up from a daze. But Kayline sees a hint of a smile behind his curly hair. He stands up straight agains and sticks his hand out.

" Noah Lister. A pleasure." His voice sounds low and smooth. There is a small hint of humor behind it. He shows his signature smile that every girl apparently falls for. Well, not this girl, Kayline thought.
