The Way I Lie

Chapter 14

Back in the Game
Kayline McKenzie

        After Kayline ends the phone call with Chris, she takes a shaky breath. Boss will probably, most likely, kill her. She'll probably be kicked out or killed because of her actions. Right now, those are the least of Kayline's worries. She thinks she knows what's going on.

             Kayline's mind travels back to all the meetings with the war councils the King has been having. Along with the Queen, training the academy harder each day along with the kingdoms militias. Kayline justs need to figure out, who and what they are up against. If her theory is correct... we could be at war. A deadly one.

    Noah clearly notices Kayline's unease and looks at her with earnest eyes.

              " You okay, princess?" Noah asks, his voice suddenly quiet. Kayline shakes her head slowly.

              " I promise to tell you everything, but I need to do this on my own first. I need to find facts before I speculate." Kayline rushes. She walks briskly out of the janitors closet with Noah close behind.

              " Does it have something to do with Maggie? 'Cause if it does, I have every right to know what's going on." Noah mentions.

              " You're right, you do, and I will, but not right now, Noah." Kayline says as speed walks down the hallway towards Magdalene's room.

              " No. You need to tell me now!" He whisper yells. Before he had the chance to say something stupid again, Kayline shoves him against the wall, taking him by surprise. He was either surprised that Kayline attacked him or he surprised of her strength.

                " Noah. I promise to tell you. But we can't do it here. I have no idea who is listening or watching us. I have no idea if I have been compromised talking to you. So if you want to talk about how our kingdom might be under attack right now, this very second, I assure you it's every man for himself." He just looks at Kayline, then her arm against his throat and back at her eyes.

                 " But you're a woman." He whispers in all seriousness. Kayline lets out a frustrated groan and lets go of him. Idiot.

                   Noah and Kayline make it to Magdalene's hospital room, with Noah by her side in silence.

                 However, when they walk in, Magdalene is gone. Tracy is sitting in a chair, with her cheeks stained with tears and her shaking hand holding her lips. Noah walk up to her and squats down.

                " Mom. Where's Maggie?" He whispers to her. Tracy looks distracted ad she slowly looks down at her son. She then looks at Kayline. With Tracy's eyes still looking at her, she slowly turns her head towards her son.

                " I'm sorry I didn't tell you the truth before. I-I don't have enough money-money to pay for Maggie's bills or medicines." She bursts into more tears. Kayline felt out of place. This isn't her family. Not that she has one.

                   " Mom. You could have told me, I could've worked more jobs or shifts." Noah argues. Tracy just smiles.

                   " My sweet boy. You definitely didn't get your kind heart from me or your father. But it's alright now. My baby girl is going to be fine." She gets up out of her seat and closes the door Kayline was leaning on. Tracy walks up to them and holds Kayline's hands in hers.
