( not edited short story )
Being an assasin may seem like fun and games, but every game has rules.
Rule One don't get caught, don't let them figure out your mission.
Rule Two, be merciless, and show no fear.
And the most important rule of all... d...
" No!" Kayline screams. Her instincts kick in and she kicks the Doctor in the guts. He crashes into the right table, breaking every test tube in the process. The chemicals seep to the ground and smoke goes in the air. The men holding Kayline let go in fear of catching the disease. The test tubes crash and smoke rises from the table.
Kayline curses to herself. The disease is free.
Grateful for the distraction, Kayline shoves her elbow into the guards face behind her and slams her foot onto the other guard's foot. The solider containing her phone comes at me but she knocks him out in one blow. Kayline grapples for her phone and gets a firm grasp on it.
The tent is a disaster. Smoke blocks her view, and her guards lay passed out on each other. Notes and glass are scattered across the floor.
Kayline moves to Mrs. Alberston's captors. One guard ran away like a coward afraid of their own creation. There was only one solider left. Mrs. Alberston is on the floor, barely making a noise or any movements.
Before the guard comes towards Kayline, she grabs as many test tubes, let's pray they are the cure, and puts them into her pocket. Kayline could save Mrs. Alberston, but she doesn't know if they will work. A soldier grabs Kayline from behind, lifting her off the ground. She swings her legs in the air, giving her the momentum to slam both her and the solider into the table.
Luckily, they landed in the safe table. But that's the problem, that means all the cures are destroyed, except the ones in her...pocket. Oh, crap.
Papers go flying along with test tubes and pencils. The shatter of glass echoes through her ears. Kayline rolls off the passed out soldier and checks her pocket. Crap, now she only has three tubes of the cure. Kayline doesn't have enough for all 4 of them. She's saving one for Magdalene, Micheal and Mrs. Alberston. With the disease spread, Kayline assumes that she has it. She decides that she will be the one to stay behind.
Before she can stand up, another solider comes running in. She quickly stand up and kicks the soldier in the gut and bring his face down to her knee. His unconscious body falls to her feet.
Kayline runs to Mrs. Alberston, desperate to hear her breathe. Kayline hears a chuckle behind her. It's the doctor, who's face seem to be burned, and slowly decaying. Kayline tries not to throw up. The stench of burning flesh fills the tent. Mrs. Alberston lays still in Kayline's arms, and she's trying to put her nose in her shirt to avoid the stench.
" That's the beautiful thing about this plague, little girl." His voice ruff and raspy. He swallows and continues, " Some people last longer, while others," Kayline looks back at Mrs. Alberston, whose face is gray and cold, " hold on to the disease and it's too late." Kayline doesn't think. She grabs a gun from a passed out guard and without looking, shoots him once in the head. Kayline gets the cure out but Mrs. Alberston refuses.
" I'm already dead. And so is my son." She barely makes out the words. He's not dead. He's not dead. Get up. Kayline tries to talk to her but Mrs. Alberston firmly grasps her arm and stops her.
" Avenge him." Mrs. Alberston made sure that her words were bold and strong. Kayline sits there shaking. Mrs. Alberston's eyes are glass and empty. Her body is frozen and her cheeks sunken in. Her red hair is now grey. Kayline exhales a shaky breath. This happened in a matter of seconds. Kayline feels her hands shaking against Mrs. Alberstons sunken face. She is gone. She was in Kayline's arm and now she was gone.
