The Reality of it All
Christina McKenzie

Chris stays in her bed until she hears a door swing open. " Chris!" She hears Noah yell. Chris grabs her gun underneath her pillow. She runs downstairs and sees Kayline carrying two bodies. It's now starting to get dark, and it's raining a little bit, but apparently wherever Kay was, it was pouring. She is soaked top to bottom. Her red stained tank top clings to her stomach, and her shirt is wrapped around her arm, and Chris can see a little bit of red bleeding through.

" Kayline!" Noah shouts as he grabs a bald man of her shoulders, and sets him on the couch. Chris trys to come forward to help, but Kay stops her.

" No! Stay back Chris!" Kay shouts. She sets down the body that she was carrying in her arms and throws a Chris a face mask. She puts it on, and Kay lets out a deep breath. She walks back over to the small, frail body and brings it to Noah. She collapses on the couch and breathes heavily. Noah looks at Kay. Something is different at how he looks at her.

" You brought her back." Noah whispers. Chris looks at Kay, who stills seems exhausted and walks over to the body in Noah's arms. Even though she is bald, Chris could tell from the pictures and from their descriptions that it's Maggie. She is cold and grey. Underneath her eyes are purple and her fingertips are blue. Kay stands up and walks to Noah.

" Look, I didn't want to do this without you and your moms decision." Noah makes a face.

" Do what?" He asks. Kay brings out 3 test tubes, but one is empty. Kay is still panting when she tries to explain. She tells them about the camp, and about the experimentation on the infected.

" I saw the notes on the table," she brings out notes from her bag, " these. I think these are a cure. I saw the other notes before they burned. They were complete opposites." Kay swallows and continues on, "I think these are a cure."

" What do you mean before the burned? What happened?" Chris asks.

" Mrs. Alberston and I got caught sneaking around. They turned us in and... well, Mrs. Alberston told me to avenger her and her son." Chris looks at Kay. Her eyes were out of focus and she has them wide open... as if she was trying not to cry. Oh Kayline, what have you done? Chris asks herself.

" Anyway, they- they injected Mrs. Alberston with the plague, and she died, only a- a few minutes later. The doctor says that people react differently to the plague, and a-apparently to Mrs. Alberston, it killed her in a time spam of 5 minutes. So Chris, you need to keep that mask on until we-we know for sure that you're safe and that the plague isn't contagious by air." Kay was talking really fast and Chris could tell that she was on the verge of tears.

" Kayline." Noah said quietly. He puts a hand on her shoulder, but Kay shoves it away and continues talking.

" I managed to get out of the testing lab, destroying it in the process expect for these test tubes and notes, I got a key card and gun, grabbed Micheal so the people wouldn't think I was just grabbing Magdalene. But let's just hope that they think I grabbed her because she is the youngest one and I was being thoughtful. A van caught up to us, killed Micheal and sliced my arm, but don't worry, I-I took care of it. L-Let's pray they won't follow us. I lost them about 2 hours ago, but got caught in a r-rainstorm, so I...I had to stop and wait it out. " Kay seems to look focused on the last sentence.

Kay looks at Micheal who is dead on the couch. Noah seem to know exactly what to do. Before Kay collapsed to the floor, Noah grabbed and slowly let her sit on the floor. Kay doesn't cry out loud. She cries in silence. For fear of anyone hearing. But for some reason, it's different.

Kay sobs and sinks into Noah's chest while he holds her. Chris has never seen her sister like this. And it terrifies her. Her big sister, who was always there for her, who showed no fear in front of her or anyone, collapsed and sobbing. Kay mumbles a couple of words between sobs. Chris manages to hear red and bodies. Chris hands start to shake and her breathing gets harder, especially with this mask on.

" I didn't want to- to give Magdalene the cure, if it's going to kill her." Noah moves Kay, forcing her to look at him.

" She is already dying. If it's going to kill her, might as well give her a chance to live." Noah whispered. Kay quiets down but tears still run down her face.

Noah takes the test tube out of Kay's hand and walks over to Maggie. Her breaths are slow now. He gets on his knees to level with her body that lies on the couch. Chris could see his hands shaking a little bit. She goes over and touch his shoulders. " Let me do it, Noah." Chris whispers.

Being a sister, Chris knows what it's like to fear for your sibling and it's the scariest thing in the world. Noah looks at Chris with gratitude and hands her the syringe and test tube. She put the syringe in the bottle, taking a decent amount out. She sticks the needle in Maggie's cold arm and pushes the serum out. The cure slowly goes into her skin. Before Chris knew it, it was done.

" It will take a while until we get definitive results." Chris says, her voice muffled from the mask. Noah nods, and sits on the couch, with his head in his hands. Chris makes her way to Kay who is still sitting there. She shakes her head.

" Half of the time, I couldn't tell what was going on." She says. Chris knows immediately what she is talking about. Her sister has this mindless mode she goes into whenever they are in battle. She blocks out all emotion and feeling, and just strategic, logical, blunt thinking. Chris sits next to Kay and she puts her head in her lap.

" The alarm was through the entire cave. It was dark and red. Letters, B.W. were everywhere. I shot... I don't know how many people." She whispers as more tears fall down her cheeks. Chris doesn't say anything. She just holds her. She holds Kay as she shakes. Chris looks at Noah who is leaning over them while he sits on the couch. His sister lays next to him, safe and sound. Chris has no idea what Kay did or saw in the cave, but she did it. And she was a hero for it.

" It was a blur." Kay's voice is shaky and Chris feels a teardrop on her jeans. She sits there until Kay falls asleep on her lap. And they wait for tomorrow.
