Rachel and Jayden were walking through the parking lot Monday morning with more energy than usual. The cool, late September wind gently blew their hair, and the air smelled of optimism.
"Mr. Schuester!" Rachel called as they walked up to their teacher. "Jayden and I went to the library and we got some sheet music, and I wanted to run songs by you that feature me heavily on lead vocal."
"Thanks, but I already got one picked out," said Mr. Schue.
"Let me help you with that," Finn said as he came up and took Rachel's bag.
"Thanks, Finn," Rachel smiled. "You're so chivalrous."
"Thanks," the quarterback said. "That's a good thing, right?"
"Yeah," Jayden chuckled. "It's a fancy way of saying courteous."
"I don't know what that means."
"It's another way of saying polite," Rachel chuckled as they walked into the school.
Jayden waved goodbye to her sister and the quarterback before heading to her locker. She put away her things, only keeping what she knew she would need for the first half of the day. She closed her locker and turned to walk to class, only to be met by a cold, blue slushie.
"Welcome to Loser Town," Karofsky teased. "Population you."
Jayden gasped and blinked her eyes a few times before heading to the closest bathroom to clean herself up before first period.
I hate high school.

"Energy, guys," Mr. Schue said as the New Directions rehearsed a disco number at that morning's Glee Club meeting. "Good with the hands. John Travolta hands. We're freaking out. Let's go. And up and out, you go down and... Good, guys."
Rachel did a high kick, and Jayden was quick to duck out of the way.
"Woah, woah," Mercedes gasped as the diva's foot nearly collided with her face. "Hell to the nah. First of all, you try to bust my face again, and I will cut you."
"That seems a little extreme..." Jayden mumbled as she exchanged a look with Artie.
"And, also," Mercedes said, turning to Mr. Schue, "this song is terrible."
"It's not the song," said Mr. Schue. "You guys just need to get into it."
"No, it's the song," Kurt spoke up. "It's really gay."
"But, like, really gay," Jayden agreed. "They're gonna kill us."
"We need modern music, Mr. Schue," said Artie.
"I'm sorry, guys," said Mr. Schue. "We don't have time to discuss this. We're doing this song this Friday at the pep assembly."
"In f-front of the whole school?" Tina asked.
"Exactly," the teacher said, oblivious to the distress in the goth's voice.
"They're gonna throw fruit at us," said Kurt. "And I just had a facial."
"Jayden and I will press charges if that happens," said Rachel. "Right, Jay?"
"Don't look at me," the younger girl said, holding up her hands. "I'm already planning on being 'sick' that day. I'm not risking getting murdered."
"Guys," said Mr. Schue. "I can't express how important this assembly is. We need recruits. There are seven of you. We need twelve to qualify for regionals. We have no choice, or the club is over. I know you guys don't like this song, but we took nationals back in '93 with Freak Out. It's a crowd pleaser. Trust me. From the top."
