a/n - in honor of naya's birthday, here's an update<3

The New Directions were messing around in the choir room before practice. Jayden was making up a dance with Tina while Artie used the wheels of his wheelchair to make a tapping sound.

Brittany was practicing pirouettes across the room, and she took Jayden's hand and twirled her around as she passed, making the younger girl giggle.

"Great news, guys," Mr. Schue said as he came into the choir room. "Just got the competition bracket for sectionals, and we are in really good shape. There's only two other teams. We beat them, we make it to regionals."

"Who are the other teams?" Rachel asked.

"Drumroll please, Finn," the teacher said as the quarterback played a drumroll. "School for the deaf in Dayton, and some place called Jane Addams Academy."

"Jane Addams?" Mercedes scoffed with a laugh. "That's a halfway house for girls just getting out of juvy."

"Th-th-this is great!" Tina beamed as she exchanged a look with Jayden.

"People who can't hear what they're singing and criminals who don't care. It's gonna be a cakewalk," Artie said, holding both hands up to high five Tina and Jayden.

"Sectionals is gonna be a breeze," Jayden said as she high-fived her two best friends.

"Competition," Mr. Schue said as he pinned some pictures to a board. "Every one of these people or elements was a champion in their own right. But they used competing with each other to make themselves even better."

"I don't understand how lightning is in competition with an above-ground swimming pool," said Kurt.

"Just go with it," said Mr. Schue. "You guys have become complacent. You were great at the invitational, but you got to up your game if you want to get through sectionals. Okay, split up. Guys on the left side, girls on the right side."

The New Directions split up as directed, however, Jayden noticed Kurt moving over to the girls side.

"Kurt," Mr. Schue said as the brunette boy turned to look at him. He nodded to the other side of the room, and Kurt made his way over to the boys side with a roll of his eyes. "Here's the deal," the teacher began. "Two teams. Boys versus girls. One week from today, you will each perform a mash-up of your choice."

"What's a mash-up?" Puck asked.

"A mash-up is when you take two songs and mash them together to make an even richer explosion of musical expression," Mr. Schue explained. "Boys will perform on Tuesday, girls the next day. I want you guys to go all out, okay. Costumes, choreography. Whoever wins the competition gets to choose the number that we do for sectionals."

"Wait, who's going to be the judge?" Rachel asked.

"Yeah, your gender makes you biased, especially since you wouldn't let Kurt be on the girls team because of your one-sided views in our sexist society," Jayden added.

"Preach," Kurt said, snapping his fingers.

"Jayden..." Mr. Schue sighed, closing his eyes and rubbing his forehead with his thumb and forefinger. "I'm the teacher, which means what I say goes. And to answer your question, Rachel, there is going to be a celebrity judge."

"Wh-who?" Tina asked.

"You're going to have to show up to find out," the teacher said as he turned and went over to the piano.

"We got this in the bag," Mercedes said as the bell rang and the group of girls headed to the door.

"Totally," Rachel agreed. "Jayden and I are going to start storyboarding our choreography tonight."
