"From now on I must struggle with the world."
—————————————————————————

"I didn't know a place like this existed here."

Atsushi wasn't sure what else to say, but felt obligated to say something, the silence that had stretched between them in the short walk from the mafia building to this tiny hidden corner of Yokohama was deeply oppressive.

Chuuya's face was shadowed by the brim of his hat, and there was nothing Atsushi could read from the hard line of his mouth nor from the stiff set of his shoulders, which made Atsushi think invariably of the unforgiving and unbending lines of steel infrastructure that lay at the core of buildings.

"I didn't either," Chuuya said, and for a moment so very brief that Atsushi fancied he'd imagined it, the tension in his shoulders seemed to dissipate. "She showed it to me."

"(Y/N)-san?"

It wasn't a question Atsushi needed to ask, but saying her name felt oddly comforting.

Sometimes, it felt as though (Y/N) had simply disappeared, or that she'd been folded into nonexistence itself by the pages of the Book that had cost her life, like she'd just been a strange dream Atsushi had, terrible and important and leaving him feeling empty and lost upon waking.

Chuuya's mouth twisted into something that almost resembled a smile. "Yeah. She said she wanted to be buried here, once. Didn't think much of it, of course. She never seemed the sort to actually die."

'I'm sorry,' Atsushi thought he should have said, but didn't know how to say something like that, words that were nearly offensive in their simplicity, but possessing a gravitational pull that could rival the very earth itself. A gravity that even Nakahara Chuuya couldn't escape.

He never did know what to say when it came to (Y/N), even when the words themselves should have been oh-so simple, but everything was always so very complicated when it came to (Y/N), and that complicatedness seemed to have only multiplied, now that she was no longer there.

"She said," Chuuya said abruptly, "she didn't want to think about what came after death, but if she did care, she'd want to be buried here."

"But I thought you said you wanted her body burned?"

"I...changed my mind, I guess."

"So you buried her here?"

"Yeah," Chuuya said, his gaze dropping from the sparkling ocean before them to the unassuming slab of stone before them.
