Day's Prior
Cole was walking inside the monastery one night on the way back to his room after getting a glass of water. His bare feet shuffled against the ground; he was trying to do his best to be as silent as possible. He stopped when he heard a muffled sound coming from Misty's room. It sounded like crying.
He stopped in front of the door and raised his hand to knock. He hesitated at first, not knowing if it was his place to say anything. But eventually he knocked on the door and called out softly, "Misty, are you okay?"
He heard the crying stop, followed by the sound of shuffling feet and sniffling. The door slid open and revealed a girl with bloodshot purple eyes, tears still staining and running down her face. The tip of her nose was red, and her long black hair was a mess; it even looked slightly matted in some places. She was dressed in what appeared to be formal dress. With a long skirt and long loose sleeves.
"Was I being too loud?" she asked softly.
"Uh, no, I mean well, I could hear you, but what I mean is, are you okay?" Cole asked gently.
She shook her head no silently. And let out a sniffle as she tried to wipe her tears off her face using her long sleeves.
"What happened? I thought you went out on a date with Lloyd?"
Hearing this, her eyes started watering, her tears began falling all over again. Cole's heart dropped as he watched the girl start hiccupping, trying to suppress her tears.
"Oh no, what happened?" He said quickly, setting his water glass down. He gently held the sides of her face, trying to wipe away the tears that fell. Unfortunately, there were a lot, and they were falling faster than he could wipe away.
"He's still caught up on Harumi! It was so obvious in the beginning, but I tried ignoring it! I thought maybe we could work through it," She blubered out. "Once he fell asleep while we were watching a movie, and he called out her name in his sleep," Misty sobbed, and she shook her head in defeat. "I don't know what to do. He's been pushing me away lately. Ever since I finally tried discussing the problem with him and Harumi."
"I'm so sorry, Misty," Cole murmured, and he hugged her.
"On top of that, I'm so worried that something else bad will happen to Ninjago! It's to a point I'm practically becoming paranoid!" She added.
He raised his eyebrow and asked, "How paranoid?"
"I've set traps in the monastery in case we're invaded. Jay's fallen into at least two of them so far." She muttered mournfully and held up two fingers.
"Sounds like maybe you should try and relax a little. You already have a lot on your mind with Lloyd and everything," He suggested gently and made a mental reminder to himself to watch out for traps.
"You're right..." She sighed, leaning against her door frame. She looked exhausted, with dark circles under her bloodshot eyes. Her face looked gaunt and paler than usual, almost like she was a corpse.
"Misty, when was the last time you slept?" He asked and peered closer at the girl's exhausted face.
"Uh, I've lost count," She admitted sheepishly, and she rubbed her tired eyes with her fists.
"Is it your nightmares again?" Cole asked gently he gently pulled her hands away from her eyes. Not wanting her to irritate them more.
She nodded, adding, "Yeah, they've gotten worse ever since my run-in with the Oni. Usually, Lloyd stays with me." Her voice trailed off, and her eyes darkened again.
"Misty, you need to sleep, you are exhausted," He insisted and added, "I can sit in a chair by your bed so you're not alone."
Her eyes widened, and she looked up at Cole. His brown eyes seemed darker in the current lighting. His hair was a mess of black; it looked like a bad case of bedhead. He even still looked a little sleepy, yet was offering to help her... "You'd do that for me?!"
"Of course, I would, I care about you, Misty," Cole replied. An embarrassed look flashed across his face, and he said, "Maybe a little more than I should." His face flushed after his last statement, and he looked away, unable to meet her eyes.
A shocked look flashed across her face, and she felt her face growing hot and muttered, "I thought you would have changed your mind by now."
"About you?" He asked incredulously
Misty nodded and looked away. He chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck, adding awkwardly, "I've liked you for a very long time, I still do, but I want you to be happy, and you're happy with Lloyd."
"More or less," she muttered, looking defeated.
Cole placed his hand on her shoulder and said kindly, "It's going to be okay, Lloyd will come around, just give him some time."
Misty's lip began to tremble again, and she whispered, "I hope you're right." She hid her face against Cole's chest as she started crying again. He wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tightly, doing his best to hold her together. He had always been her rock from the very beginning. He had no plans of letting her down now.
