Boobytraps and How to Survive Them

The rest of the drive to the pyramid was noticeably silent. As Misty continued to stare out the window. When they arrived they first met with Clutch Powers to try and persuade him to go with them into the pyramid. However, that was proving to be very difficult. The explorer was hold up in a tent and was lounging back in a chair and sipping a tropical drink that had a little paper umbrella stuck in it.

"Your assistance would be very helpful." Zane pressed as the explorer took a sip from his drink.

"Nope. No way. Nein Danke," Clutch said unmoved.

"But nobody knows what's inside. There could be valuable historical relics!" Lloyd offered

"Treasures!" Kai added

"Gold and diamonds," Jay said hopefully.

Clutch just shrugged and slurped his drink.

Misty let out an annoyed sigh and rubbed the back of her neck, they had been at this for half an hour already.

"You are the foremost expert on ancient structures, and your book, Boobytraps and How to Survive Them, is considered a seminal work," Zane said

Clutch continued to slurp his drink and said, "Flattering. But still no,"

"Professor, isn't there anything we can do to convince you?" Nya said desperately.

Just then a young man with brown hair and glass popped into the tent and shouted in a shrill and panicked voice, "Professor Powers, there's a call for you!" He held out the phone to Clutch. How seemed unimpressed, unbothered and very annoyed if his tone was anything to go off of as he said, "Now, Dwayne, I told you I don't want to be disturbed."

"But it's the Explorers Club!" Dwayne squeaked nervously.

Clutch threw his glass and shouted, "What?" and then snatched the phone from Dwayne and shouted, "Give me that." He then cleared his throat and said in a more formal voice, "This is Professor Powers."

Misty could just barely make out a British-accented-sounding voice on the other side of the phone say, "Professor Powers, "Cecil Putnam at the Explorers Club. I regret to inform you, sir, your membership is being revoked,"

"What? This is an outrage!" Powers shouted and he stomped his foot and shouted, "I demand an explanation,"

"Of course. The club's exploration clause requires all members to explore. You, sir, have not explored in over ten years." The voice said matter of factly.

"I just discovered a pyramid!" Clutch shouted indigently.

"But you have not explored it! And as we are not the discovery Club. I'm afraid I can't count that."

The ninja watched as Powers threw a silent tantrum and the voice noticing the silence asked, "Sir? Are you there?"

Clutch then answered and said, "Yes, Yes, I'm here. Don't cancel anything. I'll get back to you." He hung up the phone and threw it behind him. With a sigh, he said, "Well, guys, looks like you're in luck. Clutch Powers is open for business."

Clutch then walked over to a traveling chest and opened it, he took out a medallion and kissed it he then grabbed two flashlights.

Soon the ninja was gazing into the darkness of the pyramid, Clutch rushed in with his flashlight but then stopped forcing the Ninja to screech to the stop. Misty slammed into Cole's back, stumbled backward and rubbed her nose, and muttered, "Give a warning next time," she heard, Clutch say "Now, before we take another step, I hope each of you has read my book. It could save your life."

Kai was being blinded by the flashlight and Zane popped up behind him and said, "Of course,"

"Yeah. I loved... that book," Kai added when Clutch turned away seemingly pleased Kai sent a knowing wink to the others.

"He didn't read that book did he," Misty muttered

"No, but did you?" Cole asked out of the corner of his mouth.

"Obviously no but I at least wasn't going to lie about it," Misty muttered back as they continued walking.

Cole then turned to look at Misty and whispered just loud enough for her to hear, "Hey, I hate to be that person but, I think it's best if you refrain from using your powers in here, considering... everything..."

Misty sighed and said, "No, I understand,"

Cole then frowned and whispered, "I'm also sorry about what happened on the Land Bounty,"

"It's not your fault," Misty replied softly and she was glaring at the back of Lloyd's head as they were walking.

They reached a wide opened area and ahead of them was a very rickety rope bridge. "Chapter 8. Rickety old bridge. Only one way to cross them fast and first." Clutch said and then he dashed across the bridge. Once he made it across he said, "Last person in line usually doesn't make it!"

The ninja looked at each other and dashed across. Jay and Kai fell breaking a board and the others rushed past them. Misty grabbed Kai's hand and yanked him across the bridge, and she looked back and saw Zane rush forward and picked up Jay who was dazed he held him over his head and carried him across.

Once he made it the ninja let out a sigh of relief and, "Jay said that wasn't so bad."

"Ha. It was actually pretty sturdy," Cole agreed.

"Yeah, we got lucky. But luck runs out." Clutch said and narrowed his eyes and then continued on. They made their way through a corridor until they were standing at the top of a spiral staircase going deeper into the tomb. Jay started forward but was quickly stopped by Powers who flung out his arm and shouted, "Don't!" He then bent down and examined the spiderweb. Cole, Kai, and Misty were talking and the Misty heard Jay gasp he turned to them and asked in a rush, "Did you see that?"

"See what?" Cole asked

As they turned back to Powers and saw he was scratching his stubble and looked thoughtful and said, "I don't like the look of these."

"Uh, they're cobwebs," Kai said sounding unimpressed.

"Yeah, well, that's what they want us to think! Clutch shouted and then he turned and said, "Jump over. Like this!" And Clutch jumped over the web and continued walking down the stairs.

Misty sighed and followed Cole and jumped off the web as she was told she thought it was dumb but, "What was it going to hurt if she simply jumped over it."

Only a few steps down they heard Machinery clangs and Clutch ahead shouted, "GUMDROPS!" Cole reach back and grabbed hold of Misty's hand. Misty yelped as the stairs beneath her feet flattened and turned into a ramp and soon the ninjas were sliding downward deeper and deeper. Misty tightened her hold on Cole's hand as they slider faster and faster into the dark.
