The Royal Guard (AU)

Quick note: This is a AU where Marco is one of Star's royal guards on Mewni. Enjoy!

Marco walked up to Higgs at the front desk and got her attention. They were in the Butterfly Castle and it was midday.

"Hey, uh, Higgs. Do you know where am I supposed to be today?"

"Wow, dork. Says here you've been promoted. Your now responsible for protecting the Big S herself"

"Sorry, the Big S?"

"Star? Star Butterfly? The Princess? Man you are stupid sometimes"

"Whatever. So how long for?"

"All night"

"ALL NIGHT?"

"Well, not all night. You get swapped for Ferguson at like 5:30"

'Damn it' Marco thought in his head

'I have my second job at 7:00. You're telling me I have 2 hours of sleep?!'

"Yoohoo! Big guy!" Wake up!" Higgs hollers in Marco's ear.

"H-Huh?"

"You're gonna want to be more alert of you're gonna be protecting the Princess of our entire Kingdom, pal. I'm surprised you got the promotion with those half-asleep shifts you had back at the stable"

Marco remembered guarding the stable. It sucked. He could even get any rest secretly with all the sounds the animals made. What made it worse was the sharp metal parts of his chest plate. It was old and damaged and was falling apart. He had many reasons he couldn't buy another one. His family was in financial turmoil after being forced to get loans from sharks to pay for rent after his family's farm stopped having successful yields. That's why Marco had two jobs in the first place. Being a Royal Guard pays pretty well but to pay off the debt was gonna take a lot more than what he was currently earning. So his second job as a blacksmith's assistant was needed to keep him and his family afloat. Having two jobs and 2 hours of sleep that meant Marco's sleep schedule was horrendous, leaving him fatigued and tired almost all the time.

"Okay Marco. The Princess wants to meet you. Lucky. Hopefully you get along and she doesn't die because you fell asleep and forgot to protect her"

"Funny. I won't"

They just didn't understand why he was always like this. They couldn't understand. He did it for family. That's what kept him going.

Marco quickly splashed his face with his water and walked down to the dining room to meet the queen and the princess. He began to approach the entrance he began to feel nervous. What if she didn't like him or fired him for his bad sleep schedule? He opened the door slowly and saw her. Man, she was pretty. But also very pretty out of his league. She was a princess after all.

"Star, I'd like you to meet your new guard, Marco Diaz" Queen Moon introduced.

"Hi! I'm Star!"

"But you will call her 'Princess Star' or 'M'lady'. I will leave you two to get to know each other. Good day"

"Very well, Your Majesty"

"You know you don't gotta call me 'M'lady' or 'Princess Star, right?"

"If it is your bidding, M'lady. Nice to meet you, by the way"

Star had to admit. This 'Marco' guy was pretty cute. She didn't see many cute guys because she was always a sheltered girl, and most of her subjects weren't very appealing.

"You too! I think me and you will be best buds in no time!"

"Oh, okay"

"Cmon, I'll show you all the stuff you didn't see in your time at the stable"

"You know about that?"

"Yeah. Mom told all me about you"

"Oh, really?"

"Yeah! Now look at this. This will be your new armour. Ta daaaaa!"

Star unveiled the armour and Marco was breathless.

"Wow... Thank you, uh, Your Highness"

"No problem. Try it on try it on!"

Marco donned the armour. It was a perfect fit.

"Snazzy" Star commented.

"Thanks a lot, Your Highness"

"Anyway, I'll show you around. There's a lot to see around here"

Star and her new friend Marco walked around the castle. Star showed Marco all the cool things he'd never seen before during his shift in the stable. It was very surprising for Marco to see how big the castle really was. Eventually, after just meeting each other, they were as close as best friends.

"Then the pen broke so I got the hell outta there! Luckily your Warnicorn was merciful that day or she probably would have crushed me under her hooves!" Marco laughed.

Haha! I never knew Daisy was that strong!"

"Daisy is a nightmare to take care of, trust me"

"Well, thanks for taking care of her, I guess"

"Don't mention it. It's my job after all"

"I like you, Marco. You're not like my previous guards. You're fun"

"Thanks! Hope you don't mind me asking, but what happened to the previous guard?"

"Oh, he was executed for trying to kiss me"

"WHAT?"

"Oh yeah. That happens. You assault the queen or princess, you pay the price. But I like you. You never know, you might just get lucky and get a kiss from me one day, my guard"

"H-huh?" Marco said, a little flustered.

"I'm kidding! We should probably get to bed, eh?"

"Well, not me. I'll be guarding you. If you need me, just call! If it's late, however, My friend Ferguson will be guarding. If you need anything call for him"

"Okay! Night Marco!"

"Goodnight, Your Highness"

Star leaned in and kissed Marco's cheek. She got closer to his ear and whispered.

"Don't worry. It's just Star"

Star walked into her room leaving Marco gobsmacked and very flustered.

When his shift was over. Marco saw Ferguson walk down the hallway.

"Hi Marco"

Marco was still speechless, despite the events happening hours ago.

"You good?  You're so red it's looks like got a kiss from the Princess herself"

"About that..." He said quietly.

Looks like the day Marco got a kiss from the Princess was today...
