Chapter 23: Reward time!

"Crazy that Mephiles is finally sealed away! Now we can breath and relax and not worry about that crazy guy." Sonic said as he stretched.
"Which also means we can take a vacation. A summer vacation." He said while nudging Shadow's shoulder.

They were walking down the steps of the Green Hills college. Shadow rolled his eyes and and shook his head.
"Despite how much I'd enjoy a well deserved vacation, I doubt I'll have time."
"Come again!? What do you mean by that??" Sonic said, springing from laid back to highly alerted. Did he forget what Shadow had told him?
"Remember, I work on weekends and school based breaks. Unless I'm not needed at the office, I have to go. Even on summer break."
"Boo! That's so unfair." The azure hedgehog said as he crossed his arms. Shadow rolled his eyes.

"Hey now, I might get one or two days off if father thinks I've gained enough pity-points." Shadow chuckled at his own unfunny joke. Now it was Sonic's turn to roll his eyes.

Back at Robo-Corp, Shadow was about to enter his office and work for six hours straight in pure isolation before deciding to pick up socializing again. Before he could even grasp the handle of his own door, a hand placed itself on his shoulder.
"Hey Shadow! Um... You can go back and enjoy your summer break, y'know?" Shadow snapped to look at his brother in disbelief. All his life he had grown used to missing out on breaks and now all of a sudden he was basically free of labor for two or so months? Then again he should not complain, it would be better for him to rest his eyes and body from endless weeks of exhausting work. He could use the free time.

His shocked expression softened as he decided to question his brother.
"Why so suddenly? Is work really going to be so slow for the month I'll have off?"
""Maybe. But the main thing is that it's a reward. For you especially since the break based work doesn't apply for Sonic. After Mephiles, father and I had been debating on how to repay you for your work, considering how annoying the mission must have been, and we thought that some time for you to relax would be best fitting. Sorry I forgot to tell you earlier, little bro." Shadow gently pushed Silver's hand off himself.

"Don't sweat it. I guess I won't come in for work tomorrow?"
"Nope. Enjoy your free time. You deserve it." Shadow smiled to himself as he walked off to the elevator.

Once re returned to his dorm, he was greeted by Sonic in his usual and disastrous presence. Quills a mess, shirt nowhere to be found and sweatpants holding on to his bottom half for dear life while he was munching on some cereal, practically laying on the couch. Shadow cleared his throat as he approached the slacking hog, making his own presence clear.
"Sh-Shadow?? Should you not be at-"
"Work? Yes. But to the dismay of my nonexistent payment, I have two months off." Sonic's eyes became wide as he heard that. He sat up, placed his cereal on the coffee table and threw his fist in the air.

"Oh yeah! We are going to have so much fun!"
"If you consider it fun, it can't be so bad."
