Chapter 27: College never ends

"Shadow!!" A voice called from the other side of the dorm. Shadow poked his head up and looked in the direction of the voice.
"Yeah?"
"Have you seen my- never mind, found it!" Shadow rolled his eyes and continued to make a fast breakfast for both of them. Grilled cheese. Soon, in a seemingly unnecessary stress, Sonic ran to the kitchen.
"Calm down you goblin. We still have time."
"We do?" The azure hedgehog asked, taking a plate of grilled cheese that Shadow handed him.
"We do. In fact, we still have twenty minutes before we need to start worrying." He said.

After the two had their breakfast, they took their backpacks and walked down the stairs of the dormitory. On the way down, they saw Miles. He was accompanied by Knuckles, who didn't try and tackle Sonic for once. It had been long since any of them spoke with one another, so it was nice to see them on that chilly September morning.

"Hey! Long time no see!" Sonic said as he shook the hands of his friends, Shadow walking beside them rather awkwardly. Knuckles challenged Sonic to a race to the front of the school. He agreed as long as Shadow and Miles had to race along side them, much to their dismay.

"Ready? Steady... Go!!!" Knuckles said the countdown as the four were lined up in front of the dormitory. As soon as the echidna said the word 'go', everyone ran at full sprint. Despite the dormitory being near the college, it was still quite far away. First Miles fell back, as he got tired and slowed down. Next, Knuckles was the one who fell back. He tripped and fell on his face. Now Sonic and Shadow were the only ones running.

"Wow, you're really fast!" Sonic said, barely out of breath. Shadow was panting a bit on the other hand, but regardless he still kept up with the azure hedgehog. A smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth, followed by a reply.
"Of course. I've had plenty of time to improve my stamina."
Eventually, the two of them made it to the front of the school, Knuckles and Miles approaching them after a while.

"Well Knux, looks like you lost to a tie between me and Shadz." Sonic said while pulling Shadow into a side hug, his arm around the others shoulder. Shadow blushed a bit and averted his gaze. Knuckles rolled his eyes and scoffed.
"Whatever, Hedgehog. The only reason you won was because I'm rusty today."
"Sure you are. Well, see you guys later!" The blue one said as he swiped Shadow away and into the building. They walked into their first class, laughing as they did so.

"So, now that the break if over, we need to go back to work?" Sonic asked as he set his bag on the ground, Shadow taking a seat beside him. He hummed before giving a proper reply.
"Yes, we do. But you've got to do what you've got to do."
"Aw, man."
