Sonic adjusted himself in the hallway mirror. He wore a white turtleneck, black pants and red sneakers as well as the red emerald necklace around his neck. Nothing too fancy but not too casual either. He put on his leather jacket, then he began to finger gun his reflection.
"Looking good." He said. A voice called to him from the living room.
"Will you stop checking yourself out and get going? We wanted to pass by your mom's house before we got to the party, remember?" It was Shadow. He wore a brown turtleneck as well as blue jeans, red sneakers and the green emerald necklace. Sonic rolled his eyes playfully while Shadow put on his jacket.
"Yeah yeah, I'm basically on your motorcycle right now, relax."

After having visited the Hedgehog family home, the duo made it to the Robo-Corp building. They walked inside and took the elevator to the top floor, where the party was being hosted. They had everything: food, drinks of alcoholic and non alcoholic types, LED lights, music. Sonic dragged Shadow to the dance floor. They danced and partied for a long while. They'd occasionally make stops to drink, eat or even talk to some employees.

Sonic eventually told Shadow that he had to go to the bathroom and left the ebony hedgehog to his own devices. He fumbled with his necklace for a moment before being approached by Rouge.
"I've never noticed you wore such a nice piece of jewelry. Is that a real emerald?" She asked. Shadow looked down at the stone. It shown green in the lights and reminded him of someone. Someone special he really cared about.

He shrugged before answering.
"I think so."
"Who got you it?"
"Sonic got if for me for Christmas a year ago." Rouge awed and clasped her hands together.
"That's adorable! He must really care for you if he got you something like that." Shadow held a smile within himself and nodded.
"Yeah... I guess you could say that."
"Well, I think I'm done checking up on you. Bye Shadow." The bat turned around and walked away, disappearing in the surprisingly dense crowed of employees. Soon enough, Sonic returned from his bathroom break and they continued to party.

A few hours had passed and the inevitable had happened. Shadow had vanished. Searching beneath tables, in bathrooms and in corners of the floor he was on, Sonic was looking for Shadow. With absolutely no luck, he decided to ask someone for help. He found Amy pouring in a glass of water before sipping from it. He approached her.
"Hey Amy." She turned around with a smile, recognizing the blue hedgehog's voice.
"Hi Sonic. What's up?" She asked, her bubbly voice constructing the simple reply. Sonic sighed before asking his question.
"So I lost Shadow and can't find him anywhere. Do you have a clue on where he could be?"

The pink hedgehog thought for a moment before snapping her fingers as a thought entered her head.
"Have you tried the rooftop?"
"We have a rooftop?"
"Why of course. When you go to the employees only room you will see a latter. Once you climb up you will see a trap door. Opened it and- bam! The rooftop." She said. Sonic nodded and thanked her and walked to the employees only room that stood out in the corner of the room. 'Why the heck did I never bother checking here? It's so painfully obvious...' The hedgehog thought to himself.

As Amy had predicted- and explained- there was a latter and not too high up was an iron trap door. Sonic climbed up the latter and went through the trap door.

He was now standing on the roof of Robo-Corp. It was quite large with a railing preventing your fall to your doom. You could see all the surrounding buildings, skyscrapers and even the woods that led to their safe haven. On the parallel side of where Sonic stood, Shadow was leaning against the railing while looking at the sky. The dark hedgehog almost blended in with the dark ink sky if it wasn't for the specks of stars and his red stripes that set them apart. The blue hedgehog approached his counterpart with a smile he couldn't contain.

"Hey Shadz! So this is where you were this whole time." Shadow turned to look at Sonic with shock at first, only to relax as soon as he recognized the emerald eyed hedgehog he liked so much.
"Hello, Sonic. My apologies for leaving you behind earlier... It was getting too loud for my taste."
"Don't sweat it, it's fine." Then a silence fell over the two. The time was passing and nothing was being said. It irritated the two but they had nothing to say...

... Or did they? Shadow cleared his throat, catching Sonic's attention. The two turned to look at each other.
"Uhm... Sonic? There's something I've been meaning to tell you." Tell him? Sonic didn't know Shadow had something on his mind for so long.
"Sure, go for it." Taking in a deep breath, the ebony hedgehog spoke.
"I know we've barely known each other for a year know. But after what happened on our first encounter with Mephiles, and how brave you were despite having no business being there, something changed." He said, speaking softly as he progressed through his words. Sonic felt worried. The way Shadow was wording things made it sounds like something negative was about to follow. Shadow looked off into the sky.

"Since then, something about... I don't know, you just made me happier. And you even convinced me of doing things I'd never do under other circumstances. Your friendly nature was just so appealing to me all of a sudden. I asked Maria about it and what she told me didn't make sense until now...." Sonic was at was now rather confused. Shadow sighed and turned to face Sonic with his full body rotating.
"What I'm trying to say is that... I love you, Sonic." His face turned red upon finishing his own sentence.

Sonic blushed too. The world around them seemed to stop, waiting for Sonic's reply. The blue hedgehog smiled widely at Shadow.
"Shadow, I love you too." Now both college students were smiling. Sonic chuckled.
"So we're a couple now?"
"I... I guess so. What do couples do, exactly?"
"I know for sure that they kiss."
"Well then, let's do that."

Both of them inched closer to each other, Shadow's hands on his arms while Sonic's hands snaked around his back. Their eyes drew to a close as they grew closer to each other. As soon as their lips met, the Fireworks started. The moment was more perfect than either of them would have imagined.
