Reader's POV
"What the fuck was that?" Levi snapped at me once he was escorted back to our shared cell.
In this prison, solitary confinement wasn't usually given for long hours because, after all, the world's worst criminals were kept here and they did a lot of shit stuff, enough that putting them in solitary confinement for a day or something for landing a couple of punches on each other would be stupid.
"Last time, when you and Kenny started fighting," I started, "I had a hard time covering for you. Luckily, no one saw you but this time, we were surrounded by guards who could see you."
"And here I was trying to get you a partner," Levi scoffed.
"Sorry about what I said. Can you still try to get Kenny to join me?"
"No."
"Aww, man."
"It's your own damn fault."
"Sorry," I apologised.
"No."
"Ugh," I groaned but gave up for the time being. It wasn't like I was leaving right now. I would, soon. Maybe sometime the day after tomorrow but not now. I had just had dinner and now that I was full, I could switch on my thinking mode.
But just as I was about to start thinking, the door of the cell opened again.
What now?
"Prisoner number 69, the captain wants to see you. Prisoner number 25, the captain wants to see you too and someone will be here to take you there in a few minutes."
What?
I got up and stepped toward the door while giving Levi a confused glance that he returned even though he was controlling his expressions.
I looked at the guard's face before I turned around to let him cuff my hands. It seemed like it was the same guard who had taken me back from the interrogation room and didn't kick or push me but I couldn't see his full face this time because he was wearing a mask.
But why?
Are they even allowed to wear that on duty?
I frowned as I was led out of my cell because I realised that I couldn't exactly check his face right now to see who he was that looked so familiar.
The hair was different from the person I was relating him to but everything else, his eyes, his nose, his features, were the same. But I just couldn't remember-
"Marcel!" I gasped as he turned me around and pushed me against the wall of the prison hall we were walking through, muffling my mouth before loosening his hold once he heard me groan in pain because we had forgotten my injuries but my body hadn't.
"Quiet, Y/N. No one should hear this."
"But what are you doing here?" I gasped, happy to see him again after years.
"I work here," Marcel confessed, "Though I only started working here a few weeks ago. I was a captain in a different prison but somehow convinced my higher ups that I needed more practical experience so they sent me here for a little while."
"But why?" I questioned.
"Porco...finally called me," He looked away.
"Huh?" I smiled, "That's great!"
"It was about you," Marcel sighed, "He was worried about you. He said that Floch, Niccolo and him worried that this was going past just stealing diamonds. You always returned home injured and never told them what happened. You still talked to them but never offered to tell them your very secret plans. You told them about the diamonds you were stealing but they could tell that you were creating a bigger plan."
"Huh? I-"
"Porco called me and told me that he was worried after he found out that you were trying to implant the plan to find 'the diamond' soon and he asked me to look after you somehow since he couldn't be here. And here I am, watching over you and keeping you safe when you almost died."
"So it was you," Tears welled up in my eyes, "You brought them in the dining hall sooner to help me."
"Yes," He sighed before looking me in the eyes and smiling before hugging me, "It's nice to see you again, Y/N. I missed you and how you would turn the house upside down when you visited. Or rather, I miss Porco turning the house upside down when you visited."
I giggled as I accepted the hug, "I missed you too. And thank you for coming here for me."
"It's fine," Marcel released me as we continued walking to the captain's office.
I was pained to remember how the Galliard brothers had been torn apart. It was their parents divorce based on a misunderstanding that separated them. Porco was angry at his brother was choosing their mother over their father when their mother was the reason all of that was happening in the first place, so, Porco, being as rash and extreme as he is, stopped talking to his brother when Marcel, who still missed Porco, never changed his last name to his Mother's maiden name as a sign that he was still Porco's brother.
I hadn't seen Marcel in years and I was sure that he didn't know that Porco was still in contact with me and I was grateful when he didn't step in as a witness, as someone who knew me because that's what the authorities were resorting to after finding no records of my existence.
I was glad that Porco had finally reached out to Marcel and called him on the number that Marcel never changed in the hopes that he would someday get a call from his brother but I wasn't happy with the reason.
Over the years, I had begged Porco to finally call Marcel but he had always either responded with a refusal with a glare on his features or just brushed off the topic when he was feeling emotional. I knew that Marcel had long wished for his brother's call but hadn't anticipated for it to be something about something he needed done.
"It's fine," I heard Marcel murmur as if he had read my thoughts.
"Huh?"
"You think I don't know what's on your mind just because you're not saying it? Same old Y/N. Too obvious with her thinking."
"I'm not obvious!" I was flustered.
"Sure. Sure. But that's not all," Marcel started talking, "Porco said... he said... that he wanted to meet me. He... uh-. He said that you missed me a lot and that he was only meeting me so that you could see me."
"Same old Porco," I chuckled, "You know that he's not going to admit how he feels and that he misses you too."
"Yeah. I just," I could feel Marcel's happiness, "I'm just so happy."
"Me too."
"But Y/N," Marcel suddenly got serious, "How did you end up here?"
"Uh. That..."
"How did it all start?" Marcel questioned, "You were studying technology in one of the ivy league universities. You had your future set out for you. What went wrong?"
"Uh...."
"You don't have to tell me," Marcel assured.
"No. No. I'll tell you," I sighed as we walked along the long and gloomy hallways toward the captain's office, climbing stairs that my legs did not like but Marcel helped me up, "You know what happened to Armin, right?"
"Yeah," Marcel said. He did come to the funeral after Porco had left. That was the last time I had seen Marcel until now.
"The diamond they took from him," I started before Marcel stopped me.
"I'll hear it later. We're at the captain's office."
I nodded, accepting his response as the door to the captain's office opened while I wondered why the captain of the entire prison needed to see me. Was it a private interrogation? I never had one but I could tell that those weren't good.
But all my questions were answered once I saw the captain's face with a smirk playing on her lips.
And her confident coal eyes staring deep into mine.
