Reader's POV

"So this is goodbye, then?" Kenny asked as we conversed while working with rocks, still building the damned fortress.

"Yeah," Levi clicked his tongue.

"Anyway, it was nice seein' ya after all these years," Kenny chuckled, "It was nice seein' what ya've become. It was nice seein' that ya didn't become anythin' like me."

"No goodbye for me?" I frowned as I looked at the two Ackerman men who were working on building the fortress while I rested my back as I leaned against the bricked and cemented, grey walls of the prison I along with many other prisoners inhabited.

I had done my share of work.

I made a tiny part of the base for them to stack the bigger rocks onto.

They had difficulty stacking the bigger rocks on the base of one small rock that was upsetting the balance but I insisted that I should remain there and so they left it.

"Why should I say goodbye to ya?" Kenny glared at me, "It's not like I'll miss ya. Instead, I'd be relieved that ya're gone so I don't have to do yer share of work too!"

"Meanie," I looked away.

"Besides, ya're gonna come back here anyways after a bit. This is no goodbye."

"It might be," I was sad, "For all you know, I might never get caught again. Or I'll be sent to the Gala. Or worse, the Devil's Place."

"What even are those places?" Levi asked again.

"The Gala is The Galapagos Island; one of the most cruel prisons in the world," I explained, "And the Devil's Place is The Devil's Island which is even worse. It is also called Paradis."

"Huh," Levi finally understood, "But why do you not say their names directly?"

"Even their names are scary," I shivered.

"Whatever," Levi narrowed his eyes, "So, when are we using the plan?"

"Today," I said as though it was obvious, because it should have been when I said it, "Like I said yesterday that we would."

"But we haven't prepared for it," Levi objected, "We don't know each other's strengths or weaknesses and we can't work as a team."

"We don't need to," I explained my point, "I have always escaped from this place alone. I can do that if need be. If you can't follow the plan for some reason then follow me and I'll handle it."

"I can do just fine."

"It's decided then; we leave today."

"You didn't even tell me the plan yet."

"The plan is just for you to keep up with me. I'll handle the rest."

"Tch," Levi looked furious.

"When today?" Kenny inquired, completely ignoring his nephew's aggression.

"Laundry time," I answered.

"And where are ya goin' from here?" Kenny seemed depressed. It was the first time I had seen him like that in a long time. The last time he looked like that was when he was talking about missing his sister and husband.

"I haven't completely secured the plan yet," I said, "But if you ever leave this place and want to join me then the news will tell you where I am."
