Good enough

TW: Grace and Maiya, I know I said this week's update would be in the Photo Album but unfortunately Wattpad isn't letting me use pictures (hence no picture header for this story atm), hyperactive Liv Alexander and Mary Jean Caldwell, eating disorders, burnout, very mean dance teachers, this feels like the first cast story where Aimie isn't featured or mentioned once (miracle???), set in GSA days

"Hey, Maiya, wake up," Grace whispered, peeling the curtains open. Maiya groaned, burying her head under her pillow. "Maiya," Grace sighed. "Maiya, it's almost seven thirty."

"I'm tired," Maiya whined.

"So am I, but we have to do what we have to do. Come on, get ready," Grace said calmly, helping Maiya up.

"Do we have any late clubs today?" Maiya whispered, brushing her hair.

"No, thank god. Just an eight hour day... Anyway, I'm going for a run if you'd like to join me."

"I'd rather not. It's too dark and I'm too tired."

"Alright, I'll see you when the day begins."

Grace left their room, leaving Maiya to stare at herself in the mirror. She ran her fingers through her hair, trying to ignore her persistent headache.

"Just four more weeks until this term's finally over," she encouraged herself, standing up to get changed into her 'uniform'.

---

"Maiya, are you okay? You almost fell asleep," Liv asked, highly concerned for the youngest of their friendship bubble.

"Yeah, just a little tired."

"A little? Babe you were goners," Grace scoffed. "It's fine. Apparently we're having some visiting directors come in this afternoon, so you can sleep during their talk."

"Yeah... yeah, I'll do that."

-----

"Maiya, keep your arms parallel."

"Maiya, extend your legs."

"Maiya, don't bring your head down., Bring your whole body down with you."

"Maiya, get your relevé higher."

"Lift your legs on those turns, Maiya."

"Hold your positions for longer, Maiya."

"Miss... may I please have a moment outside?" Maiya asked.

"Why do you think you should be allowed a rest over all the others? Sit down, please, and don't ask me again."

Maiya was about to reply, but MJ pulled her back.

"Don't mess with her," MJ mouthed. "It's okay, just breathe."

Maiya nodded, squeezing MJ's hands as she tried to calm herself down.

--------

Maiya sat on her bed, rocking back and forth. It had only been a few weeks into her first term at GSA, and she was already exhausted. It was the continuous cycle of 'Wake, Eat, Practice, Rehearsal, Practice, Rehearsal, Practice, Eat, Practice, Sleep', and regardless of how much she did practice, it was never good enough.

"Maiya are you okay?" Grace asked from across the room.

"Y-yeah, j-just finding it hard to get to sleep."

She heard a sigh from across the dark room. "Do you want to come into my bed?" she asked.

"If you don't mind-"

"Come here, babe."

Maiya slowly got off her bed, slipping into her roommate's.

"Go to sleep. You have a long day tomorrow."

Grace shuffled up to her, wrapping an arm around her waist as she fell back asleep. Soon, Maiya did the same, finding comfort in the safety net of her best friend.
